Ph.D. — University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, M.S.L., Yale Law School — Certificate in New Media Studies, UNC-CH — B.M., UNC School of the Arts.

Awards: Nafziger-White-Salwen Dissertation Award, AEJMC, 2012; Second Place Faculty Award, Law Division, AEJMC, 2012; Top Student Paper Award, Law Division, AEJMC, 2009.

Book: “A Theory of Shield Laws: Journalists, Their Sources and Popular Constitutionalism (2013).

Teaching areas and approach: Communication Law and Ethics, emphasizing the history of America’s free speech traditions from 1722 to the present.

Research/creative interests: Legal history, focusing particularly on the role that journalists and press advocates have played in shaping the meaning of the First Amendment. Media law, focusing particularly on protections for whistleblowers and other confidential sources. Public policy, focusing particularly on government access and transparency.

Current research project or creative work: Working on a book of history about a crusade led by journalists that completely changed the way the U.S. Senate operates — for the better.

Favorite quote: “If something cannot go on forever, it will stop.” Also known as Stein’s Law, coined by Herb Stein.

Favorite fiction: Orwell’s “1984″ and Huxley’s “Brave New World.”

Favorite nonfiction: “The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power” by Daniel Yergin, both the book and the eight-part documentary.

Favorite poets: Wallace Stevens (dead), Derek Walcott (living).

Favorite movies: “Wings” (1927), “All Quiet on the Western Front” (1930), “Gone With the Wind (1939).

Favorite Supreme Court case: Branzburg v. Hayes (1972).
