Teaching areas and approach: At High Point University, I teach strategic communication at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I take a “real-world” approach to my teaching, drawing on my experience in corporate communication (including public relations, crisis communication, media relations, investor relations, employee communication and advertising) and my academic background in media and rhetoric. I subscribe to the approach of Ann E. Berthoff, who advises that theory and practice must inform each other. I believe, as she does, that language is an instrument that helps us see and articulate relationships.
Research interests: I have a strong interest in science and health communication as well as biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical industry rhetoric. My doctoral dissertation, titled “The Rhetorical Helix of the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries,” was a study of how society has come to think and talk about these two industries both separately and in relation to one another.
Current research project or creative work: Right now I’m taking a look at the labels that medical professionals, educators, families and others give to children with disabilities to determine how such labels work to either hinder or facilitate understanding.
Favorite quote: “Our greatest freedom is the freedom to choose our attitude.” –Viktor E. Frankl, 1905-1997, author of “Man’s Search for Meaning”
Favorite novel: “The Life of Pi” by Yann Martel
Favorite movie: “12 Angry Men” (1957 version with Henry Fonda)
Coolest thing you’ve done in the last few years: I rode an elephant to the summit of the maharaja’s palace in Rajasthan, India.
