The Sechrest Gallery of Art is pleased to announce the acquisition of a major collection of prints by famed Nigerian printmaker, Bruce Onobrakpeya. Onobrakpeya has been designated a “Living Treasure” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and his work has been featured at the Tate Modern in London, the National Museum of African Art of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the Malmö Konsthall in Malmö, Sweden.
This collection was given to the Sechrest Gallery of Art by Dr. Robert (Bob) J. Brown, the current Chair of High Point University’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Brown acquired these prints, along with many other wooden sculptures and textiles, during his travels in west Africa over the past several decades. His gift to the Sechrest Gallery supports the Gallery’s goal to highlight diversity and a global perspective in its collecting and exhibition practices.
The Sechrest Gallery will feature these prints and other objects from Dr. Brown’s collection in an exhibition that will be open from November 1 through December 12. A reception honoring Dr. Brown and unveiling the Bruce Onobrakpeya prints will be held on Tuesday, November 5 from 4pm – 6pm in the Sechrest Gallery.
