In this talk, Dr. Laurent Dubois will explore the links between soccer and other forms of culture, including contemporary visual art, film, and literature. Dr. Dubois will begin by offering an overview of the spread and anchoring of soccer throughout the globe, offering a few thoughts about precisely why this cultural form has become so widely shared even as it has taken a variety of different forms and expressions in different parts of the world. He will then explore how artists have engaged the question of precisely what makes soccer so powerful as a global form of culture, and the ways in which they have sought to represent that power in other forms. The intersection between soccer and contemporary art, Dubois argues, raises powerful questions about the shape of culture — and the relationship between “high” and “low” cultures — in the contemporary world.
