The music department is excited to present mezzo-soprano, Dr. Candice and collaborative pianist, Arlene Shrut of the Juilliard School in a vocal concert on March 26 at 5:30 in HFAC. The hour-long recital is a brief look at the history of the magical art song genre. Music presented progresses from the Shakespearean dramatic style of 17th Century composer Henry Purcell to the absurdly humorous and inappropriately sexual songs of American composer, William Bolcom. In between those extremes is a musical look at German art song or “Lieder”, the impressionistic French art song or “Melodie” and fiery Spanish “art song called “Canciones.” This concert will provide an experience for all music lovers as they take a look back at the hugely popular music genre that dominated the musical world for 350 years.
