The first Mexican-American photographer on staff at the Los Angeles Times, photojournalist José Galvez and his Chicano colleagues at the Times won a Pulitzer Prize in 1984 for a series on Latino life in Southern California. Galvez left the Times in 1992 after winning many other awards for his photography. Galvez was senior photo editor for and a contributor to Americanos, a multimedia exhibition led by Edward James Olmos documenting Latino life in the United States.
