Phoenix Festival – Nathaniel Mackey

Nathaniel Mackey is an American poet, novelist, literary critic, editor and jazz aficionado. He is currently the Reynolds Price Professor of English at Duke.  Mr. Mackey is a National Book Award winner for poetry, Chancellor of the Academy of American Poetry for six years, and a winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship, among other honors.  As a tribute to High Point’s jazz heritage, members of the HPU Jazz Ensemble will also be playing at this year’s annual Phoenix Festival.   Open…

The Greensboro Symphony explores the fine line between Heroes and Villains this November 7th at High Point University. Initially written in celebration of Napoleon’s revolutionary regime, Beethoven’s Symphony #3 swiftly changed course when Bonaparte revealed his true intentions & proclaimed himself Emperor of the French in 1804. Barbara Nessim is an American artist, illustrator, and educator.  As a young professional, she broke gender boundaries as one of very few full-time professional female illustrators in the United States during the 1960s.  She entered the highly competitive field of graphic design by illustrating record album covers, and magazine covers for Rolling Stone, Time, Ms, New York Magazine, and The Boston Globe.  She was a pioneer in the practice of digital art and illustration and has since used the computer…

Human rights photographer and installation artist, Todd Drake, creates art that addresses human rights issues among marginalized communities.  Working collaboratively with community members, Drake creates images that are both specific and universal and reveals his concern for the most basic of human rights – to be considered fully human.  Drake created the exhibition HELP: Hidden Work, Hidden Lives.
