Initially written in celebration of Napoleon’s revolutionary regime, Beethoven’s Symphony #3 swiftly changed course when Bonaparte revealed his true intentions & proclaimed himself Emperor of the French in 1804. Nathaniel Mackey is an American poet, novelist, literary critic, editor and jazz aficionado.
