Today, the Office Depot interns had the opportunity to take a field trip to the POG lab. POG is short for Planogram. This is a facility where Office Depot tests the way merchandise will be displayed in the stores. It also is a facility for vendors to come and present their products and showcase how they would look on a shelf. If you were to drive past the building, you would have no idea what was inside, but once you step through the doors it is set up like a real Office Depot store, filled with hundreds of products and supplies.
We learned about the setup of all the different shelves, end caps and other features in the store. One example that we saw, were two different mock ups of the Keurig coffee stands. One shelf was set up with just the coffee set in rows on the shelf. The other had fancy wooden panels and had more of a Starbucks look. Despite the sleekness of the wooden shelf, the merchandise planners decided the plain shelves would be best.
One really cool partnership that Office Depot recently announced was an anti-bullying campaign with the band One Direction. The boys have each picked different colors and messages to promote on their individual binders, notebooks, nail polish, wrist bands and many other products that will be for sale in the store in July. One cool part of the store is there will be a backdrop with all of the boys that you can pose with. The interns and I had fun taking our pictures with the band!
You would never know how many cool products Office Depot carries until you walk around a store for hours like we did. They had binders with funny messages, pens with mustaches on the end and much more. Learning about how the physical setup of a retail store was really fun!
