I can officially say that I have sung on a Broadway stage! Yes, it was just “Happy Birthday”, but its progress…baby steps right? Today is Charles Strouse’s 85th birthday and last night the cast and crew of Annie celebrated by bringing him onstage after the bows. After surprising him with the biggest cake I have ever seen we all (even the audience) began singing “Happy Birthday” to the most embarrassed man I have ever seen! He was so thrilled that he called it one of the best birthday’s he has ever had. In fact, the phone has been ringing off the line today with the amount of people asking to wish him a Happy Birthday.
The celebration back stage was filled with little orphans running around with red velvet cake in their mouths, photographers from playbill.com, old friends of Mr. Strouse and even Jane Lynch made a quick appearance! Once all the orphans came down from their sugar kick, they all got in a line and began singing “Tomorrow,” but instead of using the lyrics of Martin Charnin, they substituted their own wishing him a happy birthday and thanking him for his “genius note making.” I was probably my favorite memory of the night.
