Media Fellows

7.26 Media Fellows 1For the past week and a half I have not been at my internship but I have been in Los Angeles, California with High Point’s Media Fellow Program. High Point University’s Media Fellows Program gives students global perspectives and real-world experiences in the media industry. This program creates a living-learning community for 16 communication majors each year. As a member of the inaugural class I am very excited to out on one of the program’s first trips.

7.26 Media Fellows 2So far we have had some great experiences meeting with industry professionals and getting a behind the scenes look at the business. We have had the chance to go to a filming of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and meet with Bruce Evans, Senior Vice President of Current Series at NBC. Mr. Evans was able to tell us about how he brings all of the different departments together in order to help produce successful television series.

7.26 Media Fellows 3Most recently we enjoyed a meeting with the some members of the Hollywood Radio and Television Society. We were able to talk to them one-on-one about their day-to-day responsibilities and ask questions about how they got their start in the business. One of the panelists was Jacob Fenton who represents celebrities such as Christine Baranski and Sasha Allen. It was fantastic to hear from people who started in the mailroom and now hold very high-level positions.

This trip has been an invaluable resource in giving us exposure to what our future careers will be like. We have also had the chance to tour the American Film Institute and see the sights of Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, and Sunset Blvd. We are looking forward to meeting a few more people and making the most out of our time here!

Christina Buttafuoco: Hearst Magazines

Posted on June 24, 2013 by Posted in Entertainment, Internships, Journalism .

6.24 buildingHello from the center of the universe…New York City! Since the beginning of June, I’ve been completely in my element as an editorial intern at Hearst Magazines for not one, but TWO major publications. What began as a simple cover letter and resume led to offers from first Country Living and soon after O, The Oprah Magazine. Don’t underestimate the importance of adding personality to your cover letter and objective! As a writer, I added a bit of honesty and humor to both and, sans connections, stood out from the Hearst hopefuls.

Five days a week, I make the short commute from Long Island to Midtown Manhattan. My office is in Columbus Circle, a mere two blocks from Central Park. In the morning I grab my (completely necessary) iced coffee and people watch in the park before heading up to the 32nd or 36th floor, depending on the day.

I have the most amazing editors to guide me at each publication that I’m getting to know on a personal level. They’re young women who started out just like me, as an intern at Hearst, but are always quick to encourage me that this is just the beginning of the journey…and that Hearst likes to hire their interns. I feel so fortunate that I’m able to make two internships at high-profile magazines work, and get my name out there. Though it’s only June, we’re wrapping up production on the October issue at both magazines…look for my name in the masthead!

Chelsie Gastright: The Daily Quirk

6.20 Website HeaderOn June 7, I got an email from the managing editor of The Daily Quirk, an online news blog that covers Arts & Entertainment and lifestyle and wellness topics. She briefed me on how this internship was unpaid, writers had to contribute at least 2 articles per month, and it was a virtual internship.

A virtual internship, unlike standard internships, means that I can do all the work from home. While I will still be sitting at home, I have work on a daily basis that I get to do for this website that will keep me busy and active.

On top of being able to write in a new style I have yet to explore in my time at High Point University, I will have opportunities to interview well-known authors, artists, singers and actors over the phone and through email. I will also be able to edit videos that I produce and with pre-filmed material.

And with that, I start my journey of a summer internship with The Daily Quirk. I have already written my first article that came out June 18, and I am excited to chronicle the rest of my journey with this unique internship experience.

Fast Cars and Freedom

6.4 Taylor Car5:00am came all too early on that brisk May morning. I arrived at the station at 6:00am and headed out with Country 92.5 to Lime Rock, a motor speedway.

Lime Rock was having an event to honor military heroes and I was thankful to get to be a part of the event. No event is ever complete without music. That was clearly evident right from the start. I learned how to compose myself in a situation and how to approach miscommunications. When 92.5 arrived at Lime Rock we asked one of the managers where our equipment was located. A member of the MID staff at Clear Channel had told us that he left the equipment at Lime Rock since he was there the day prior (have to save room 6.4 Lime Rockin the vehicles of course). The manager looked at us like we had three heads and told us that our equipment had gone back to Hartford.

A slight glimpse of panic brushed over the manager’s face because what’s an event without music?! Without much effort it seemed my boss went into crisis communication mode. She politely told the manager to hold on a moment while she called another MID staff member at Clear Channel. The person on the other line told us that the equipment should be there. When we told the manager this, he shook his head and said “I don’t know what to tell you.” My boss looked at me 6.4 Country 92.5and said, “This is why we always arrive to an event an hour early. You need to be prepared to expect the unexpected.” We discussed alternative options, because it was essential that we upheld our end of the contract.

We immediately hopped in the car and decided to go to the local Walmart to buy a connector cable for the car. If worst came to worst we were going to blast music through the Country 92.5 vehicle with the aide of our cellphones and the cable. As we were pulling out of the drive, a second manager from Lime Rock came running up to us. She stopped us and said that they did, in fact, have our equipment. There was a miscommunication among their staff about whether or not they had Clear Channel’s equipment and where it was being stored if they had it.

6.4 CarLucky for us, we didn’t end up having to purchase anything to make the appearance a success. I learned that it is important to maintain a level head, and to not get worked up over the little things. My boss taught me that there is always an alternative solution that can be found if you have a clear mind and rational approach. This experience also taught me the importance of communication. Miscommunications can lead to problems, so it is best to have all the ducks in a row before doing anything else. A team or staff is 6.4 Tayloronly as strong as its weakest player or member; therefore, it is imperative that everyone is on the same page and understands that page.

At Lime Rock, I set up the stations booth, and learned how to set up stereo equipment. Setting up the sound system and such was not as difficult as I had predicted. I already felt like a pro because I had experience with setting up cables and microphones thanks to a studio production class I took at High Point University.

The next hours were spent greeting listeners, having them play games in hopes of winning a prize and encouraging people to enter a raffle to win Tim McGraw tickets.

Despite the freezing temperature, rain, wind and minor miscommunication, the event was successful and I had a blast working with Country 92.5.

Last Friday Night

Blog 2 TaylorMost interns end their workday on Friday around 5:00pm. Not me, I was just getting started.
Music hardly sleeps and I soon realized I would do the same. I arrived at the office at 7:30pm, only to be there for maybe 40 minutes. During those 40 minutes the event manager for Kiss 95.7, another intern, DJ Munchie (a jock as they call the talent in radio) and I devised our game plan.
Before we could leave we needed tweet about the event and collect various items:
STAFF BADGES
CAMERA
ZEPHYR 1 +2
WIRELESS MIC
Blog 2 EventPROMO BAGS W/ BANNERS, SCISSORS, TAPE

We took the KISS 95.7 car, a 2006 GMC Yukon, to the event venue, a night club in downtown Hartford, CT. Every Friday night at Up or On the Rocks, KISS 95.7 does a promotional event known as Club KISS. The decor and music turns from a typical night scene to a lively environment with everything KISS 95.7.

Blog 2 WallEven though the event did not start until 9:00pm, we arrived at the venue at 8:30pm to set up. I was tasked with hanging up an array of KISS 95.7 posters/banners. I learned that when two entities, KISS 95.7 and Up or On the Rocks, it is crucial to make sure both parties receive brand awareness. With that in mind I made sure both company’s logos were visible everywhere and that I greeted people by saying “Welcome to Up or On the Rocks, hosted by KISS 95.7.” I learned how an event can promote two seemingly different services, radio and a night club, in one fell swoop.

During the event I updated social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, Vine and Instagram. I also took a ton of photos for promotional reasons. The photos were used for social media purposes and will be going online at KISS 95.7 in less than 24 hours. The photos are also used as “proof of sponsorship.” They are used to make sure that both KISS 95.7 and Up or On the Rocks upheld their ends of the contract for the event. In between gathering proof of sponsorship, I was handing out prizes and aiding with promotional giveaways. Every 20 minutes I gave away a tanning package to a lucky winner. The winners were anything but random. I always thought that giveaways were spontaneous but in reality they are staged! The various prizes were given to people who had a birthday that weekend or to people that really wanted attention from the #1 Today’s Hit Music station, KISS 95.7.

The night was filled with laughs, contests, prizes, and of course, music. The event was scheduled to run until 1:00am. At 1:15am I aided in the pack-up, clean-up and goodbyes that go along with any successful event.

The entire radio show was done live on the air from Up or On the Rocks. The best part was when DJ Munchie gave a shout out to the “fabulous interns,” gave Becca and I the microphone to say our names “Taylor and Becca.”

“Be sure to look out for our fabulous interns Taylor and Becca who will be walking around with some great prizes.” So cool! I had a brief moment of fame and it was exciting.

Back at the office, we spent the next 15 minutes evaluating the event. We discussed questions like: What went well? What could have been done better? How could we have entertained the crowd more? Did the sponsorship make sense?

After discussing those questions it was finally time to head home. I pulled into the driveway at exactly 2:15am, an hour that came rather quickly.
