Nature of Design

Design of the built environment focuses on creating appropriate settings for the inhabitants and users of a given space.  Interior design is grounded in human ecology – which identifies and investigates humans’ impact on the biotic world (McDonnell, 1997) and explores the relationships between humans and their natural, social, cultural, and built environments. In this Learning Community, you’ll learn the essential vocabulary and principles of design in Interior Design 1100 (Design and Society), explore the interconnectedness of the natural and built worlds in Environmental Science 1110 (Introduction to Environmental Science), and hone your analytic and writing skills in English 1103 (College Writing and Public Life).  Our examination of the conceptual, historical, and ecological dimensions of design in this Learning Community begins with David Orr’s book, The Nature of Design: Ecology, Culture and Human Intention, which will provide a common starting point for many lively discussions of the purpose and function of built environments!
