Dr. Evie Fair-Baker, Mezzo-Soprano/Contralto, is a native of High Point and returns to the area after completing her Masters and Doctoral degrees from the renowned Shenandoah Conservatory in Northern Virginia. Dr. Fair-Baker began her singing career at a very young age performing Jazz and Blues standards with her father’s band. She also performed not only vocally but instrumentally on Jazz Saxophone, Flute, and Piano. Dr. Fair-Baker continues to devote much of her performance time to the study of Jazz and Blues.

While in Northern Virginia and the D.C. area, Dr. Baker performed in numerous Operatic performances with the Shenandoah Conservatory Opera Company. During her residency with this company Dr. Fair-Baker performed as Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro, Margarita in I Quattro rusteghi, Dalila in Samson et Dalila, and Charlotte in Wether. As Dr. Fair-Baker began to transition into a more Dramatic Mezzo/Contralto, she was contracted to perform more dramatic roles such as Florence in Albert Herring, Carmen in Carmen, the Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Madame Flora in The Medium. Dr. Fair-Baker performed these roles as part of the Shenandoah Conservatory Summer Institute program with the world renowned conductor Jan Wagner and opera director Bard Suverkrop.

Dr. Fair-Baker has also held a singing engagement at the Bay View Summer Festival in Michigan. While in residence at this festival Dr. Fair-Baker performed the roles of Dorabella in Cosi fan Tutte, and the Eldest Nun in The Sound of Music. Dr. Fair-Baker also performed a Lieder Recital as well as an African American Spiritual Tribute.

Shortly after these roles Dr. Fair-Baker began to study with High Point University’s very own Dr. Alexa Schlimmer. With both Mrs. Tobin-Scott’s and Dr. Schlimmer’s help, Dr. Fair-Baker was granted a full Scholarship to the Shenandoah Conservatory.

Dr. Fair-Baker continues her efforts as a life-long learner and researcher with the publications of her Doctoral Dissertation, “A Study of American Women’s Poetry in Song: Based on Garth Baxter’s From the Heart: Three American Women, Willa Cather, Sara Teasdale, and Susan Laura Lugo.” and Master’s Thesis, “Societal Influences on Composers and their Compositions as Typified in Beethoven’s Fidelio.” Dr. Fair-Baker is currently studying the effects of Quantum Physics and Unitative Listening on music and human perception.
