Adjunct Instructor of Piano

DR. ROBERT N. HALLQUIST, Associate Professor of Music, joined the full-time faculty at High Point University (HPU) in August of 2012 after three semesters as an adjunct faculty member there. At HPU he teaches individual piano lessons and a course in piano literature; he also accompanies individual student and faculty instrumentalists and vocalists, as well as HPU’s Chapel Choir. He has also accompanied HPU’s Musical Theatre Workshop and its Opera Workshop. Previous work experience includes full-time appointments at Mercer University (Macon, GA) and the University of Northern Colorado (Greeley), as well as part-time faculty appointments at Catawba College (Salisbury, NC) and Davidson College (Davidson, NC). In addition, Hallquist served as Director of the School of Music at the University of Northern Colorado for eight years. Beyond the realm of the academy, he currently holds appointment as pianist/accompanist at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church (Greensboro, NC) and maintains an active schedule as a piano tuner in central North Carolina. Hallquist’s educational credentials include a Bachelor of Music from Centenary College of Louisiana (Shreveport), a Master of Music from Indiana University (Bloomington), and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of North Texas (Denton), where Nena Plant Wideman, Abbey Simon, Zadel Skolovsky, and Joseph Banowetz were his principal teachers. Hallquist subsequently pursued advanced piano studies with Sophia Rosoff, President of the Abby Whiteside Foundation. His performances as a solo and collaborative pianist have taken him throughout the United States, as well as to Germany and China. His pianism has been featured on Georgia Public Television and on WFMT Chicago’s famed Dame Myra Hess live radio broadcasts.
