High Point University Welcomes Two Ambassadors

HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 6, 2006 - High Point University will host the U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, James P. Cain, and the Danish Ambassador to the U.S., Friis Arne Petersen, on Jan. 10 for breakfast and a tour of the campus.

Cain and Petersen are visiting High Point University to witness its amazing success and the incredible philanthropic efforts of the institution.

"We are honored to welcome the ambassadors to our campus and look forward to showing them the wonderful transformation under way at High Point University," said President Nido Qubein. "We are also eager to discuss with them HPU's ongoing commitment to giving back to the community which has been so supportive of us."

High Point University recently increased its giving to the United Way of Greater High Point by 110 percent at $80,000. The spirit of volunteerism is alive and well here as students gave more than 1,100 hours last semester to causes ranging from local animal shelters, to the Red Cross to the Jimmy V Foundation. Nearly any weekend, there's a car wash, bake sale or other brand of fund-raising to benefit a worthy cause. HPU's athletes are no exception to the rule. The athletic department's "Community Champions" program posted more than 1,400 volunteers hours last semester as well.

At the breakfast, Qubein will speak to these and the other ways the university gives to the community, as well as give the ambassadors a tour of campus, highlighting the myriad construction projects that are in progress thanks to his aggressive fund-raising efforts. The university is investing $100 million over the next five years in construction, renovation, academic programs, athletic facilities, faculty development and student life.

High Point University offers students an extraordinary education in a fun environment with caring people. HPU is a liberal arts institution with approximately 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 52 countries and 36 states at campuses in High Point and Winston-Salem.
