High Point University Welcomes Students
HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 16, 2006 - High Point University enters its 83rd academic year this weekend with record freshman enrollment - 530 - which shatters last year's class of 412.
"The interest in High Point University is exploding with record numbers of interested students," says President Nido Qubein. "We are working hard to improve upon this great university, and people are taking notice. Campus visits are up 65% year-to-date; inquiries for the 2007 freshman class are up 43%. Every statistic is pointing upward and we’re grateful," says Qubein.
On Friday, new students living in the new Blessing Residence Hall will begin moving in to their amazing new homes. They will find private rooms arranged in two-, three- and four-bedroom suites, including bathrooms shared by no more than two people, full kitchens and living areas. The furnished apartment-like dorm rooms are equipped with refrigerators, sofas, chairs, beds and desks.
The remaining new students - freshmen and transfers - will move in Saturday, with returning students moving back Sunday and Monday. They will find their rooms have been completely renovated, including new carpets and closets, ceiling fans, fresh paint and entirely refurbished bathroom facilities.
"Our students are our number one priority," says Qubein. "We are ensuring that each student receives an extraordinary education in a fun environment with caring people."
A host of orientation activities are planned for students and their parents including:
- Orientation Ecumenical Worship Service, 11 a.m. Aug. 20, Hayworth Chapel. A non- denominational worship service designed for entering students and their families. Music will be provided by soloist Dr. Alexa Jackson Schlimmer, associate professor of fine arts and music, and Marcia Dills, chapel organist. The Student Government Association and Student Orientation Leaders will serve as worship leaders and ushers.
- Rene Godefroy, 7 p.m. Aug. 20, Hayworth Fine Arts Center. One of America's most inspiring motivational speakers, Godefroy's personal story of struggle, grit and perseverance epitomizes triumph and the American dream.
- Patrick Henry, 7 p.m. Aug. 21, Hayworth Fine Arts Center. A singer-songwriter from Nashville, Tenn., Henry uses music and humor to inspire students to live up to their potential both in and out of the classroom.
- Steve Atwood, 7 p.m. Aug. 22, Hayworth Fine Arts Center. Besides being one of the most respected educators and pioneers in the professional field of hypnotherapy for over 15 years, Atwood is also an award-winning, world-class entertainer. He is considered by many to be America's foremost stage hypnotist.
