July 28, 2010 - Elizabeth "Lizzie" Buckthorpe, a rising senior at High Point University, is interning at NBC Connecticut, the state's NBC affiliate which covers all of Connecticut. "I am a journalism major at HPU and want to be an anchor, so working at a TV station is the perfect thing for me," says Buckthorpe. "I get hands-on experience, but also get the inside scoop about the industry from the people in it."
La'Shelle Manning, a rising junior majoring in biology at High Point University, is spending her summer interning at the Department of Defense in Silver Spring, Md. Manning is working under Tricare Management Activity, specifically a branch entitled the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE), which focuses on promoting the resilience, recovery, and reintegration of warriors and their families as it relates to their mental health.
John Gillespie, a rising senior at High Point University, is putting his political science major to practical use as the assistant to the campaign manager of Sheriff Mark Luttrell, a candidate for mayor of Shelby County, Tennessee. Gillespie has spent the summer assisting Sheriff Luttrell at community meetings and fundraising events.
Ryan Brown, a rising senior majoring in mathematics and actuarial science with a minor in statistics at High Point University, is spending his summer interning as an office clerk in the finance department for the Department of Justice. As part of his internship, Brown checks in travel vouchers from attorneys' offices and legal divisions throughout the U.S. to reimburse and log travel expenses.
Eric Spencer has been hired as a clinical counselor by the Office of Student Life at High Point University. Additionally, Spencer is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master of Science degree and an Educational Specialist degree, with a focus on couples and family counseling, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
High Point University students want to get the most out of their time in college – that's why many have opted to participate in the ever-growing study abroad program. Italy, Spain, Greece and more - students are flocking to other countries to broaden their horizons and education. Dr. Kelly Norton, director of experiential learning, says the program has become so popular, that in fact, summer 2010 marks the largest summer study abroad group in HPU history.
While the majority of students are on summer vacation, High Point University has still been a center of activity – boasting guests from many states across the nation. In June alone, the campus hosted nearly 3,000 visitors, thanks to early registration, open house events, campus tours and Summer Experience move-in. "This not only creates a lot of activity on campus, but in the High Point community as well, with visitors taking advantage of the many amenities that our city has to offer.
Gail Adams has been hired as the graduate marketing and recruitment specialist in the Norcross Graduate School at High Point University. Adams received her Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. and has been employed by Gardner-Webb University, Campbell University, and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Music.
Bryan McDermott, a rising senior at High Point University majoring in political science with a minor in finance, is investing his time wisely this summer in an investment bank at JP Morgan Chase & Co. in New York City. Additionally, McDermott looks into the eligible borrower’s Net Asset Values (NAV) and their lendable assets (LA) and liabilities to grade them.
David Fatheree, a rising senior at High Point University, has landed a summer internship with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Fatheree is an information security and privacy major, with a concentration in criminal justice and a minor in management information systems. In his internship, Fatheree works with the Digital Evidence Department, the Computer Crimes Department, and the Information Technology Department.
