As part of its annual weeklong Keller Seminar, High Point University will host Dr. Michael D. Coogan on March 23-27. Coogan will conduct the weeklong seminar; he will also provide the annual Finch Lecture at 11 a.m. on March 24 in Phillips Hall Room 120. The topic of the Keller Seminar will be “Job and the Problem of Suffering,” which will include an examination of the book of Job and its poetic treatment of the human condition.

High Point University will have quite a large guest at the Design, Art and Technology Symposium – a 55-foot-long cardboard creation named “Gulliver,” a piece created by internationally acclaimed artist James Grashow and a team of HPU students. The reception for “Gulliver” will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 5 in the Sechrest Gallery of HPU?s Hayworth Fine Arts Center.

Dr. Barbara Leonard, associate dean of the School of Education at High Point University, has been elected president of the Davidson County Community College Foundation, Inc. Leonard previously served as vice president and member of the executive committee. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees for DCCC as the ethics liaison. She previously served as chairperson for the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Kate Fowkes, professor of media and popular culture studies in the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication at High Point University, was recently awarded a fellowship from the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE). “I am honored to have won the NATPE fellowship, and I found the conference to be extremely informative,” Fowkes says. “I gained insights into the most recent trends in television and got an insider’s view of the industry.

Thanks to the Think BIG Awards, four professors can continue pursuing projects that will help further High Point University’s tradition of educational excellence. The professors – Dr. Elizabeth McCorquodale and Dr. Harold Goldston, from the Department of Chemistry and Physical Science; Jay Putnam, from the Department of Performing Arts; and Dr. Jim Casey, from the Department of English – were awarded the grants during a special presentation on Feb 19.

Dr. Renzo Honores, assistant professor of history at High Point University, along with several HPU students, attended the Harvard National Model United Nations event Feb. 12-15 in Boston. e annual event is a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly and its different committees. This year’s educational event was attended by more than 100 universities from all over the United States and several other countries.

Chris Crecelius, a 2002 graduate of High Point University, is busy making a name for his media company and magazine, “Line Up” – so busy, in fact, that he hopes to line up a bi-monthly publication schedule by next year. Publishing out of Wilmington, Crecelius – who majored in business administration and marketing with a minor concentration in fine arts at HPU – says the magazine first hit the stands on July 4, 2005, and went into quarterly publication in 2006.

Jacqueline Kicherer, a senior majoring in political science at High Point University, is networking with some of the country’s leading policy-makers in Washington, D.C., by interning as a research assistant at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative research and analysis think tank. As the internship progresses, Kicherer will have the opportunity to attend lectures, meet political leaders and work in different parts of D.C.

Dr. Vernon T. Farrington, associate professor in the School of Education at High Point University, was a featured speaker at the Canadian National Middle Years Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Farrington, who made two presentations during the conference, presented “Leadership in an Age of Dramatic Change,” as well as “Reaching School Potential through Leadership Coaching.”

Senior marketing students at High Point University recently received help with their marketing plans thanks to assistance from Karen Adams, president of Fox 8 WGHP, and Cindy D’Ambrosio, regional account manager at WGHP, who both visited the campus on Feb. 9. Students also learned that WGHP is the top FOX affiliate in the nation, and learned the advantages of using broadcast television in promotional campaigns.

High Point University continues to draw visitors to the City of High Point with special events, sports activities and more each month – and February is no exception. Figures for this month show an impressive and significant impact on High Point, thanks to an estimated 9,650 visitors who will bring in an estimated $1.2 million to the local economy. HPU draws 58,000 visitors to the city annually.

Bruce Graham, a playwright and screenwriter who rose to prominence in the 1990s as one of America’s top dramatists, will visit High Point University as a guest artist in the Media and Performance Symposium. Graham will be on campus Feb. 26-March 1 and will present a series of classes and writing workshops over a three-day period. He will also attend the opening performance of his play, “Early One Evening at the Rainbow Bar and Grille,” which will be held on Feb.

Marcus Penick, a senior human relations major at High Point University, is spending his semester making people feel a little better thanks to an internship in the Emergency Department at High Point Regional Hospital. He says he gets to do a variety of helpful tasks, such as refilling the saline warmers, but his main goal is to make sure each patient and his or her family members have the best, most positive experience possible.

High Point University was the scene of fun and fellowship for more than 1,500 people at its annual Family Winter Weekend, held Feb. 6-7. Some of the highlights included Bingo at the Slane Student Center and a movie in the Hayworth Fine Arts Center on Friday. Saturday included a 5K run, campus tours, HPU women’s and men’s basketball games, and a tailgating party.

High Point University is ready to rock – thanks to its brand new radio station, which is making its official debut today. The station, which has been in the process of testing for the past two weeks, will air as a student-programmed Internet station at http://www.hpur.org/. Programming and music will be broadcast yearlong during all hours. Students will broadcast live from 4 p.m. to midnight every day during the academic year.

High Point University recently hosted more than 150 parents and children for the fifth annual Piedmont Science Fair for Non-Public Schools. The event, held on Jan. 31, included two one-hour demonstration shows – a chemistry demonstration by Dr. Harold Goldston from the Department of Chemistry at HPU, and a physics demonstration by Dr. Bill McNairy, a lecturer and physics lecture demonstration coordinator from Duke University.

Senior marketing majors at High Point University recently received assistance with developing their senior projects thanks to special guest Dawn Booker from the Piedmont Triad Partnership, who visited the campus on Feb. 2. Booker, vice president of marketing for the Piedmont Triad Partnership – one of the 10 best economic development organizations in North America according to Site Selection magazine – helped students develop a marketing plan.

High Point University will host the Woodrow Wilson Scholar Lecture, featuring special guest lecturer Kathleen O’Neil. O’Neil, president and CEO of Liberty Street Advisors, LLC – a company she established in 2001 – previously headed IBM’s Global Financial Markets Infrastructure Group and served in a series of executive roles for 24 years at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The High Point University Theatre will present the comedy “Early One Evening at the Rainbow Bar and Grille” in the Empty Space Theatre of the Old Student Center. The show will run Feb. 26 through March 1 and is open to the public. “In addition to being an offbeat comedy, it’s also a modern morality play, addressing – in a comic way – some important ethical, moral and religious issues,”Simpson says.”

High Point University will host “Design Matters,” the Fifth Annual Design, Art and Technology Symposium (DATS), on March 5-6.
