The High Point University Volunteer Center, led by David Perez, a junior, hosted a blood drive on Jan. 27 in the Slane Student Center. The event was sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity at HPU. The Volunteer Center previously held a blood drive in November, where they collected 92 units from the HPU family – including 37 first-time donors.
High Point University senior marketing students recently had a special visitor in their marketing management class. Beverly Nelson, president of the Archdale Trinity Chamber of Commerce, held a marketing plan briefing for the class on Jan. 28 in Norton Hall. She encouraged the students, who are working on their senior project, by helping them develop a marketing plan
Joshua Jones, a senior majoring in accounting at High Point University, is getting valuable career experience, thanks to a hands-on internship at Bernard Robinson and Co., L.L.P., a public accounting firm in Greensboro. Jones says he has been busy since day one, working on client engagements that vary from audit and writing of financial statements to the preparation and processing of tax paperwork.
Some High Point University theatre students have been honored recently, thanks to outstanding theatre performances over the past year. “Almost, Maine” was recognized as an honorable mention production, which means it was one of the top eight productions in the nine-state southeast region. Three outstanding HPU student performances were recognized for this production as well – Nathan Ruffin, Luke Mullinax and Sean Scurlock.
High Point University’s weekly worship service will include a special remembrance of Dr. Pat Norton, a dedicated friend to HPU. The service will be held 5:30-6:15 p.m. on Feb. 4 in Hayworth Chapel. All HPU chapel services are open to the public. Norton Hall is named for him, and a scholarship fund in his name is available to HPU students.
Dr. Christine Allred, professor of education at High Point University, recently had the opportunity to take part in the Sino-US Education Forum in Guiyang, China. The three-day event began with an opening ceremony, where dignitaries from both China and the United States talked about each country’s education system’s accomplishments, as well as their plan to improve education.
High Point University students recently presented papers at the Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, held in November in Nashville. Dr. B. Gray Bowman, professor of chemistry at HPU, accompanied the students and presented research as well. Students presenting were: W.H. Craig Clodfelter, Joseph W. Kennaday, Chelsea A. Betts and Claire K. Poh.
Dr. Dustin Johnson, assistant professor of education and educational leadership coordinator at High Point University, recently served as a presenter and panel member for the “Leadership Program for Aspiring Principals,” held on Jan. 14 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Johnson says serving as a presenter for the program was one of the most rewarding experiences of his career.
Destinee Brown, a senior at High Point University, is very busy discovering the ins and outs of the City of High Point this semester thanks to a valuable internship experience with the High Point Convention & Visitors Bureau. Brown, a senior majoring in human relations, began her internship at the start of the spring semester. She is already discovering that the experience is helping expand upon what she’s learning through her studies at HPU.
James Yarbough, a senior at High Point University, is gaining valuable career experience thanks to an internship at IComm Design in Greensboro. Yarbough, who is majoring in computer information systems, is interning as a Web designer and developer at the local company, which produces Web and media products for a variety of businesses in the Triad, including managing Natural Triad Magazine.
Dr. Peng Deng, professor of history at High Point University, recently presented a paper at the International Symposium on the Shangshanxiaxiang Movement, sponsored by Fudan University and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. The event was held Dec. 21-22 in Shanghai, China. “Due to the sensitive nature of the topic and its bold argument, my paper generated much discussion after my presentation,” Deng says.
Dr. James Zarick, associate professor of sport management at High Point University, recently presented a paper at the Academy of Business Administration Global Trends Conference, held Dec. 18-23 in Cancun, Mexico. Zarick presented a paper titled “The Impact of Volunteerism on the Perceptions of a Sport,” which collected data from volunteers at a 5K road race in an effort to try and determine if their perceptions were changed by their experience as a volunteer.
Dr. Renzo Honores, assistant professor of history at High Point University, recently presented a paper at the 123rd annual AHA Conference on Latin American History, held Jan. 2-5 in New York City. Honores presented “Caciques as Legal Benefactors: Cacial Legal Offensive in the Andes, 1552-1572.” The paper explores how the Andean caciques (local lords) used the legal system and how these lords were successful in their legal campaigns between 1552 and 1572 in the Peruvian Andes.
Gail Clements, instructor of English at High Point University, presented a paper at the Western Conference on Linguistics on Nov. 23 at the University of California – Davis campus. Social network links include kin, co-workers, neighbors, fellow church members and more,” says Clement. “Deciding with whom we as speakers will identify ourselves either reinforces or changes the way we speak.
Dr. Richard Parker, associate professor of business in the Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce at High Point University, had a busy fall. Not only did Parker serve as co-chairman of the Joint Conference of the Middle Atlantic and New England Council for Canadian Studies and the Southern Association for Canadian Studies, but he also co-wrote and co-presented a paper with Dr. Zagros Madjd-Sadjadi, associate professor of economics at Winston-Salem State University.
In conjunction with the annual Martin Luther King Day Service, High Point University hosted its first annual MLK Day of Service on Jan. 19. The event, which was held to help further the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s special message of peace, hope and inspiration, gave HPU students, faculty and staff a chance to serve others in the community.
The High Point University community honored the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during its annual Martin Luther King Day worship service on Jan. 19 with a special guest speaker – the Rev. Dr. Raphael G. Warnock. Warnock, a native of Savannah, Ga., who serves as senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the spiritual home of King, delivered a message of hope, inspiration and peace.
Dr. Judy Isaksen, associate professor of communication at High Point University, recently authored a chapter in “Teaching Race in the 21st Century,” a scholarly anthology intended for fellow professors and graduate students.
High Point University students continue to make a positive impact on the High Point community, thanks to opportunities provided through the university’s civic engagement courses. The courses, which include an experiential learning component along with class work, are a substantial addition to experiential learning opportunities already available at HPU. Students in the civic engagement courses have the opportunity to work with local organizations, providing valuable community service.
