Dr. Charles Mathewes

We are excited to host Dr. Charles Mathewes, Carolyn M. Barbour Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, for a lecture and conversation. Dr. Mathewes will talk about the different approaches to religious ethics among Jews, Christians, and Muslims, in keeping with the University’s year-long emphasis on diversity. Reconciliation in the Pew: Why Do All My Church Members Look Like Me?

Dr. Willie Jennings, Associate Professor of Theology and Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School, and Dr. M. Shawn Copeland, Professor of Theology at Boston College, join local church leaders to discuss the experiences of local congregations as they relate to embodying ‘beloved community’ across racial and ethnic differences.  Reception to follow.

Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, 4:30pm, at High Point University (in Phillips 120):

Envisioning Beloved Community: Christianity and Race

Dr. Willie Jennings, Associate Professor of Theology and Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School, and Dr. M. Shawn Copeland, Professor of Theology at Boston College, present brief lectures reflecting on the meaning of racial reconciliation for faith communities, as well as assessing the prospects for and obstacles to such reconciliation, and then engage in extended Q & A.
