Scholarship Opportunities

Financial Aid for Religion and Philosophy Majors and Minors

 

Each year over $70,000 is awarded from 33 endowed scholarships to assist students as they pursue a major or minor through the Department of Religion and Philosophy.

 

Scholarships Historically Include:

O.E. and Agnes F. Bivens Scholarship
Preference will be given to students who are studying for full-time religious education work with priority to students who are entering or training for a career in missions work.

 

Rev. Chester Andrews Scholarship
For pre-ministerial, religion, or majors with demonstrated need.

 

Irvin B. and Marge P. Black Scholarship
Preference given to a major within the Religion Department.

 

Roland A. Blackwell Scholarship
Preference given first to ministerial students. Second preference to orphans. Third preference to other worthy students.

 

Brantley-McCulley Scholarship
First preference to ministerial students from North Carolina. Second preference to ministerial students from other states. Third preference to a student from North Carolina.

 

Charlotte Churchill Brown Scholarship
First preference to students majoring in the Religion Department. Second preference to students majoring in Education.

 

Carr United Methodist Church (Durham, NC) Memorial Scholarship
Preference given to students majoring in Religion Department

 

Foil V. and Ruth Charles Scholarship Fund
Preference to students majoring in Religion Department.

 

Davis Street United Methodist Church, Burlington, NC Scholarship
First preference to a student from the Davis Street United Methodist Church. Second preference to a student from the Central Piedmont and with a demonstrated financial need.

 

T.B. and Mary Neal Dixon Scholarship Foundation
Must be a member of a United Methodist Church. First preference to a student preparing for a career in a religion agency or church. Must have high character and purpose. Must earn some part of expenses.

 

Linley W. and Mary O. Gerringer Scholarship Fund
First preference will be given to an academically able male student in junior or senior standing with plans to enter the ministry or the field of Christian Education.

 

Robert M. and Frances S. Hardee Scholarship Fund
Available to an academically able student with grade average of at least “B”. Must be of good Christian character and preparing for full-time Christian ministry. First preference will be to students planning to serve the Western North Carolina Conference of the UMC, having demonstrated leadership characteristics, who will promote the cause of evangelism in the church. Recipients should have the intention to continue their preparation for the ministry beyond the baccalaureate degree in a recognized Divinity School.

 

Kate B. and Nat M. Harrison Memorial Scholarship Fund
First preference to worthy and needy pre-ministerial students. Second preference to worthy and needy students preparing for a career in medicine. If neither of these students requests scholarship funds, any student acceptable to the Financial Aid Committee and approved by at least one member of the Harrison family.

 

Mary Jane Hefner Memorial Scholarship
To aid deserving young students preparing to serve mankind, especially those entering the Christian Ministry. Should have a demonstrated financial need.

 

Reverend George Washington and Mary Foust Holmes Memorial Scholarship
First preference to pre-ministerial or Christian Education major from Alamance County, NC.

 

Henry Frank Hunsucker and Henry Franklin Hunsucker III Scholarship
First preference to needy and deserving ministerial students with an academic average of “B” or better.

 

John D. Idol Memorial Scholarship
First preference to students studying the fields of religion and humanities.

 

Thomas William Langford Scholarship
For students who are pursuing careers dedicated to ministering to children. Preference will be given to those students who are entering careers involving early childhood education, either through Christian Ministries or public education. Preference will be given to students in their junior or senior years of study.

 

Charles Franklin Long and Mina Alexander Long Memorial Scholarship
To assist needy and deserving students preparing for the ministry. Preference will be given to a member of the Wesley Memorial UMC of High Point, NC.

 

Methodist Protestant Women‘s Memorial Scholarship Fund
Must demonstrate financial need.

 

Mr. & Mrs. B.A. Moser Scholarship Fund
First preference to students preparing for work in the Christian Ministry and/or students from Davis Street UMC in Burlington, NC.

 

Dwight Moody Nifong Scholarship
First preference to students preparing for a career in education or a church-related career and having demonstrated need.

 

Ollie Hine Nixon Scholarship
Preference to pre-ministerial students or students who wish to become missionaries. Second preference to education, pre-medicine, or humanities majors.

 

Royster-Parker Scholarship
First preference to pre-ministerial students.

 

The Mary Tucker Scholarship
First preference to students working toward full-time Christian work.Second preference to other worthy students.

 

United Methodist Scholarship
Member of the U.M. Church with B average and demonstrated need.

 

John Scott Welborn Scholarship
To a needy and deserving upper-class ministerial student. Must have an academic average “B” or better.

 

Western North Carolina Conference Scholarship
Must demonstrate a financial need and be a member of a United Methodist Church within the Western North Carolina Conference. Must also be recommended by the pastor of the student’s home church.

 

Grady Whicker Scholarship
Must be a pre-ministerial student with financial need.

 

Willard M. White Scholarship
Academic scholarship. First preference to Religion Department majors.

 

Lossing L. Wrenn Scholarship
For the benefit of young women from the NC Methodist Conference who are preparing for a career in church work.

 

Ann Swindell Wyche Scholarship
For senior pre-ministerial majors, “B” average.

 

Yanceyville Scholarship
First preference to student fromYanceywille Methodist District.
