Dr. Mark Teaford

Mark TeafordDr. Mark Teaford is an international leader in physical anthropology and an innovator in anatomy education. He did his undergraduate work in anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, and his graduate work in anthropology and anatomy at the University of Illinois, where he received his Ph.D. in anthropology. Following his graduate training, he took an NIH-Postdoctoral Fellowship in anatomy at Johns Hopkins University and then joined the faculty there, eventually becoming Full Professor in the Center for Functional Anatomy & Evolution and Director of the Anatomy Course in the School of Medicine. While at Johns Hopkins, he helped oversee the implementation of a new medical curriculum and the construction of a new Medical Education Building. He also won the prestigious W. Barry Wood Award for Outstanding Preclinical Teaching, and the Professor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. In addition to his love for teaching, Dr. Teaford is an internationally-recognized researcher in physical anthropology, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications, 3 edited books, 150 national/international scientific presentations, and over $1.5 million in grant support during his career. He is committed to repaying those benefits back to the academic community through numerous service opportunities. He is currently Co-Editor of the Journal of Human Evolution, he has reviewed grants and manuscripts for innumerable agencies and journals, and he has been actively-involved in the American Association of Physical Anthropologists and the Maryland State Anatomy Board. Whenever possible, Dr. Teaford tries to reach out to the local community, giving talks to elementary and secondary schools, libraries, and non-profit organizations.
