Matt Carnaghi’s freshman research project on the motion of a collapsing spring released from uniform circular motion has been submitted to the American Journal of Physics. The project resulted in a fruitful collaboration with Jeff Regester of Greensboro Day School and Tom Dooling of UNC Pembroke.
A YouTube video describing the project and its results was produced by Jeff Regester and is shown below. A preliminary version of the paper submitted to AJP was posted to arXiv. Data, Matt’s poster from the AAPT 2014 Winter Meeting, and Tom’s simulations are available on comPADRE.
