For the eleventh year, SPS and the HPU Physics and Chemistry departments hosted the Piedmont Science Fair for Non-Public Schools. More than 100 parents and children attended the day-long event. K-12 students presented their projects, and HPU physics and chemistry majors set up hands-on experiments and performed an hour-long demonstration show.
Dr. DeWitt and multiple physics majors built some new demonstrations for the show. They shot M&Ms and a ping pong ball through an aluminum can. And they recorded the demonstrations with a high-speed video camera, so the audience could see the demonstrations in super-slow motion. We also added more excitement to the bed of nails by breaking a cinder block on Paddy’s chest with a sledge hammer.
