Rev John Fitzgerald

The Reverend John Fitzgerald is the Senior Pastor of Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC, where he lives with his beautiful wife, Chris, and their two sons, Ben and Alex. John’s formative years were spent in High Point, NC, where his father, Dr. Bernard Fitzgerald, served as the Senior Pastor of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. He attended public school in High Point and was an active part of the Wesley Memorial UMC children’s and youth departments.  His family moved from High Point in 1979 when his father became the Asheville District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church.  A 1980 graduate of Asheville High School, John then matriculated to Appalachian State University where he earned a B.S. degree in Industrial Psychology.  In 1985, John answered his calling to pursue ordained ministry and entered Duke Divinity School.  John returned to High Point in 1997 when he was appointed as the Senior Minister of Covenant Church United Methodist on Skeet Club Road.

John and Chris have served several appointments across our annual conference including Center UMC in Greensboro, Yadkinville UMC in the North Wilkesboro District, Covenant UMC in the High Point District, and Boone UMC. On July 10, 2011 John and Chris came home to Charlotte to serve Providence United Methodist Church.

During his ministry, John has served on the Western North Carolina Conference Board of Ordained Ministry.  He was in the first class of the Reynolds Academy, a two-year leadership program offered by Duke Divinity School and the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro.   Since completing the Reynolds Academy in 2000, John has been a member of the Reynolds L.E.A.D.
