The Investigations Unit within HPU Security is comprised of experienced investigators to assist the HPU community in successfully resolving a variety of campus incidents. The goals of the Investigations Unit are to be an advocate for students, assist students that have been victimized, and to recover and return property to the owners. The Investigations Unit works closely with the HPU Office of Student Life, HPU Judicial Affairs, local law enforcement and judicial services.
Meet our Staff
Captain Derek Stafford is responsible for overseeing investigations of campus incidents, compliance with federal mandates (Title IX & Clery Act), and crime prevention programs. He serves as the HPU liaison with law enforcement and judicial officials.
Captain Stafford served for 30 years with the High Point Police Department, retiring in 2011 after serving as Assistant Chief of Police. Captain Stafford graduated from Appalachian State University before joining the High Point Police Department. He has attended executive training and leadership programs at the FBI National Academy, Harvard University and NC State University in addition to numerous other service-related training. Sergeant Donald Belton, Jr. is a High Point University alumnus with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. Sgt. Belton joined the Security department in 2008 and has served in multiple roles for the department.
He is responsible for investigating various campus incidents and overseeing Clery Act compliance. His office is located at the North College Administration building at 1911 North Centennial Street. Phone: (336) 841-9085

Campus Security Authorities
High Point University has identified numerous staff and faculty who serve as Campus Security Authorities (CSA’s). Campus Security Authorities are individuals involved in security or who have a significant responsibility for student and campus activities. These staff and faculty must report crimes to High Point University’s Security Department or the High Point Police Department and inform the victim of the resources available to them.
