Credit Transfer

For High Point University to recognize the credits you complete abroad, you must earn at least a grade equivalent to a C in the U.S. HPU will not accept credit for courses with grades of C– or below. Grades for all courses earned abroad are recorded on the international transcript. Credits are received by HPU as transfer credits, which means the credit is received but the grade is not. Your HPU grade point average will not be impacted positively or negatively by your study abroad courses.

What will I experience at Bond?

I have always been interested in studying abroad. Ever since I was a young child, I knew I wanted to see as much of the world as I possibly could. So when I entered High Point University, checking the opportunities for studying abroad was one of the first things I did. Ultimately, I decided to study at Bond University in the Gold Coast of Australia. I had many reasons for selecting this university. First, as an International Relations major, I noticed that Bond had a spectacular reputation in that field. Second, I have always wanted to go to Australia, and studying there was the perfect opportunity to do so. I would not just be visiting for a few weeks; I’d be able to live there for almost half a year, truly getting a full experience of the country.  After selecting Bond, I really had no idea to expect, all I knew was that I was incredibly excited to get there.

Gold Coast: The Gold Coast is quite an interesting place. The Gold Coast is more of a regional city, made up of many coastal suburbs in southeast Queensland. The area really has a small town feel, yet you can be in the bright lights of one of Australia’s biggest vacation communities, Surfer’s Paradise, in literally 5 minutes. Australia as a whole is a truly fascinating place. All of the states in the country are vastly different. Traveling around the country is encouraged to get a better perspective of the country as a whole. Cities like Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and of course, Sydney all offer incredible experiences that are truly unlike anywhere else.

Bond University: Bond University is an amazing university. The location, the facilities, and the staff are absolutely world class. Professors and tutors are always available to students, and are incredibly open to talk, even outside of a university setting. Bond is one of the best universities in Australia, so you can rest assured your professors are highly qualified and are experts in their field. Classwork at Bond is very challenging. Every course, in every field will be demanding. While it is demanding, the work done there is extremely rewarding. Because of the way courses are set up in Australia, a lot of work is done in a very practical, real-world atmosphere, and you will do a lot of hands-on training.

Accommodations: My accommodations were located 5 minutes off-campus, in a development called Varsity Shores. I shared a condo with two roommates who were not from HPU. Living with these two guys, one Canadian and the other Norwegian, really made making friends easy, as we helped each other branch out and meet people. The Shores had a great atmosphere and many of us in the development became great friends. I did not have a meal plan, so I needed to do all my own grocery shopping. I enjoyed the freedom of shopping on my own, and it allowed me to dictate my diet and allowed me to live a healthy lifestyle. With that being said, Bond does offer a fantastic meal plan, and has many great places to eat on campus. In addition to this, there are some fantastic restaurants and coffee shops located just a few minutes away from campus.

Students now live on campus at Bond University with a meal plan.

Travel: As mentioned before, travel is encouraged. A popular travel destination for Bondies was Brisbane, which is one of Australia’s largest cities and located just an hour away. On the opposite end of the spectrum, one of Australia’s best beaches and surfing locations, Byron Bay, is located an hour to the south. Seeing the Great Barrier Reef is an absolute must. Being able to see one of the world’s truly great wonders is something I’ll never forget. With all of this being said, the Gold Coast has plenty of activities to offer. The university itself has great athletic facilities and a pool. Off-campus, there are great places to shop, fantastic nightlife, in addition to fantastic parks and wildlife reserves nearby. Being bored on the Gold Coast and Australia in general is near impossible.

Advice for future students: My main advice for students going to Bond would be to have an open mind, and to be adventurous and outgoing. You will meet so many interesting people from all over the globe. These are people you’ll make incredible connections with, and will talk with long after your time in Australia is done. Be open to new things! Australians are incredibly friendly and will make you feel right at home. Another thing to note is that your money will not go as far as it does here. Prices for just about everything are double what we are accustom to paying. Expect to pay a little more in your travels. Even though things may be expensive, it doesn’t hurt the overall experience that you’ll have; fun really can be had at any budget. Other than that, just be ready for some warm weather and some fantastic people! Have fun!
