Study Abroad Charles University

Charles University

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague has become the place for aspiring young American writers and artists to gather.  Charles University (or Collegium Carolinum in Latin) is the oldest university in Central Europe, founded in 1348 by Charles IV. Its history runs deep with ties to Jan Hus in the 1400s, becoming a seminary in the 1770s, and connections to Franz Kafka in 1900s. After Nazi occupation, during which all universities were closed, typical university life began again in 1945. Following the Velvet Revolution of 1989, academic freedom and a high degree of autonomy from the state became goals of the new era.
