What will I experience at Lorenzo de’ Medici?
Read about Human Relations major Paige Karn’s experience in Italy below:
I had travel to Florence, Italy years before with my family and fell in love with the city so much that I vowed to return. While applying to colleges my senior year of High School I made sure that each college had a respectable study abroad program because I knew that it was something that I was interested in. I knew that studying aboard would be a once in a lifetime opportunity that I could not afford to pass up. Once I was ready to experience this wonderful opportunity I immediately chose Florence because of it’s culture, location, history, and of course food.
The City/Country: Florence was an amazing place to study aboard for many different reasons. The city itself was small enough that you were able to travel by foot and everything was in walking distance, but it was large enough that you were able to see new sights almost every day. Florence had the feeling of an old country with some modern touches. I truly felt as if I was in Italy everyday walking around the city on cobblestone streets because of the culture that I was surrounded by. Walking down side streets I would run into leather markets, street artist and performers and then would find a delicious small pizzeria or restaurant. Italian people were also very nice, warm people and I only had good experiences with them. Another plus of studying here was that most Italians understood English well enough that you were able to communicate. Italy is also very easy country to travel to and from because European countries were just a short plane or train ride away.
The University/ Classes: When I began researching the different programs located in Florence I decided on Lorzenzo de’Medici because they offered a variety of different classes that would allow me to continue my classes for my major but also allowed me the chance to emerge more into the culture by taking art history or an Italian cooking class. The University did not have a campus in the city. Instead the campus buildings were spread throughout the city in about a 7-mile radius. Navigating throughout the city to your class buildings however was not difficult and it allowed you the opportunity to see more of the city. The professors are Italian but the classes are taught in English. The students are all part of the Lorenzo de’Medici program and are primarily American, but there are other international students.
Accommodation/Meals: This program offers different choices of accommodations to choose from. You are able to chose between living with an Italian family or living in apartment with other students. I chose to live in the apartment with other students and was placed in a apartment with six other girls. The apartment had a wonderful location of overlooking the Arno River and was very central in the city. The apartment came furnished with furniture, kitchen utensils and a washing machine. The University does offer a meal plan, however Florence is full of markets selling fresh meats, cheeses, fruits, and vegetables, and part of the experience of being abroad for me was cooking delicious Italian food at home. Besides the food markets there are many delicious restaurants.
Travel/Activities: The University offers traveling opportunities throughout Italy which allows you to travel with other students at your University. Or there are many other wonderful companies that offer opportunities to travel with groups of students at different Universities throughout Europe, which is a great way to meet, other students. I used companies to travel and also traveled on my own, and I found it to be very easy to plan trips at very affordable costs. The school also offers different clubs that you can join which is a great way to meet other students.
Advice: Be open to new experiences that this city will bring you and take advantage of your time while you are aboard by embracing the culture differences. Be sure to travel as much as possible but to still take the time to experience Italy and Florence. Florence is a very welcoming city to foreign students; however do be careful when you are out at night of your personal belongings, because there are thefts here just like any other city. But above all have a wonderful experience!
