Nagasaki, JapanStudents in the Nagasaki program will complete coursework that complements, reinforces, and enhances the intercultural experience. Students are encouraged to participate in the university’s extracurricular activities that are organized by Japanese students. Clubs range from basketball to tea ceremony to kendo to music to dancing. No prior knowledge of Japanese is required.

Requirements: 2.8 cumulative GPA, 2.8 major GPA, Junior status
Application deadlines: March 15 for Fall term abroad; October 1 for Spring term abroad
Academic Program
The Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies is home to several cultural and international communications centers. While students do not need any prior knowledge of Japanese, they will study Japanese language at the appropriate level (beginner to advanced) and take the remainder of their courses in English. During the term, students take 12-18 semester credits, including one Japanese language course at the appropriate level (4 credits), 3-4 Japan Studies courses (2 credits each), and 1-2 seminars in Traditional Japanese Arts (1 credit each). In addition, students learn about Japan and Japanese culture through living with a Japanese family, interacting regularly with a Japanese university student who serves as a language tutor, taking field trips and tours to significant historical and cultural sites, and participating in organized social events.

Credit for Semester Study Abroad
For High Point University to recognize the credits you complete abroad, you must earn a grade equivalent to a C in the U.S. HPU will not accept credit for courses with grades of C– or below. Grades for all courses earned abroad are recorded on the foreign transcript. Credits are received by HPU as transfer credits, which means the credit is received but the grade is not. Your HPU grade point average will not be impacted positively or negatively by your study abroad courses.

Housing
Students have the option of living with a host family or in an all women/men dormitory.
Homestay
The International Office at (NUFS) will arrange for the American students to live in Japanese homes in the surrounding community, and students who choose and are accepted for the homestay option are placed in Japanese homes and become part of the family. The makeup, location, and type of accommodation (apartment, condominium, or home) will range greatly, but all host families are very eager to share Japanese language and culture with American students. Some host families have a lenient attitude toward their student’s social activities, but some insist that their students keep a regular schedule.
Residence Hall
Female students have the option to live in the Ampelos Dormitory, the women’s dormitory. Located at a convenient site neighboring the campus, Ampelos has 9 floors and about 300 female students live there. Residents live in single rooms and each room is equipped with a bed, desk, chair, electric range, air conditioner/heater, telephone, closet, and a private bathroom complete with a toilet and sink.This accommodation option does have restrictive dormitory rules including a 10:30pm curfew and no male visitors.
Male students have the option to live in the Heiwa Male Dormitory, the men’s dormitory. Residents live in single rooms equipped with a bed, desk, chair, air conditioner/heater, telephone, and closet. The kitchen facilities, bathroom, and washing machine are shared with three units.
Meals
Included in your homestay and accommodation cost are seven breakfasts and seven evening meals each week, and any additional meals are paid for out-of-pocket and arranged by the student.

Cost Breakdown for Fall 2013 & Spring 2014
Application Fee: $500.00
The application fee is non-refundable. Due at time of application.
Program Fee: $20,096.88
The program fee is payable to High Point University and includes tuition, fees, housing, and some meals. Participants are billed at the HPU All-Inclusive Fee rate of $20,800 less of $703.13 for meals not included.
Note: Total may vary due to currency exchange rate and tuition costs.

IMPORTANT: High Point University affiliates with the University of Wisconsin at Platteville (UWP) to provide this educational program to HPU students. Students looking for information online may find discrepancies in program fees between what HPU charges and what UWP charges. Due to the terms agreed upon in our affiliation agreement, HPU students cannot apply directly to UWP for this program, nor can they opt to pay program fees directly to UWP.
