Study Abroad Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University

Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University - Saint Petersburg, Russia

Saint Petersburg is the most European of Russian cities. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703 as Russia’s “Window to the West,” it still retains many of the Baroque splendors of the former empire, more bridges than Venice, and a fairytale atmosphere of gold-domed churches, elaborate palaces, and riverside parks. Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Shostakovich, and Lenin all have ties to Saint Petersburg.

Academic Program

The St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1899 and became one of the major universities of Russia and the former Soviet Union. The University is home to more than 20,000 students and 2,000 professors, lecturers and instructors.

The academic program is organized by the Russian Language Center at the Preparatory Department for Foreign Students, one mile from the main campus. This department trains students from all over the world who wish to enter higher education at Russian universities and is highly regarded for excellent teaching of Russian as a foreign language.

After participating in an orientation and a 2-day visit to London, study abroad students will enroll in 12-18 credits. All students enroll in a 9-credit language course at the appropriate level. Elective courses in English are also available.

To view other course offerings, visit the St. Petersburg course catalog.

Credit for Semester Study Abroad

For High Point University to recognize the credits you complete abroad, you must earn a grade equivalent to a C in the U.S. HPU will not accept credit for courses with grades of C– or below. Grades for all courses earned abroad are recorded on the foreign transcript. Credits are received by HPU as transfer credits, which means the credit is received but the grade is not. Your HPU grade point average will not be impacted positively or negatively by your study abroad courses.

Housing

For the first two months at Saint Petersberg State Polytechnic University, students must reside in a residence hall to get accustomed to the program. After the two months, students must decide between staying in the residence hall or trying out the homestay option.

Residence Hall

Reside in the comfortable residence hall for Russian and international students at St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University in a 2-room suite (two students per room, four students per suite) with kitchenette (two hot plates, microwave oven and a fridge/freezer), toilet and bathtub/shower in each suite. From here it’s a 10-minute walk to the nearest Metro stop and then a 25-minute ride to the city center.

Homestay

Living in a Russian homestay is a fantastic way to become integrated into the culture of the country and learn Russian. However, you must be open minded and flexible in order to get the most out of your experience. Students are usually placed with a single woman, often a widow without family at home or a divorced mother with one or more children. Students may be placed on their own or in a double room with another AIFS student. Private homes do not have Internet access. Homestays are limited and subject to availability.

Meals

You will receive a meal allowance to subsidize meals from Monday to Friday. Please note this will not cover the cost of meals in expensive restaurants but is intended for use in cafés or the University cafeteria, or to purchase food to cook meals in the dorm kitchenette.
