Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Stellenbosch is South Africa’s second oldest town, after Cape Town, and is located in the world’s most beautiful wine country with the Jonkershoek Valley on the southern tip. The city of Cape Town and superb beaches are 30 minutes away. As for animal encounters, South Africa boasts the “Big Six”: lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and whale. The year-round, Mediterranean-like climate makes it an ideal location for outdoor activities. In addition to their academic programs, most study abroad students participate in volunteer activities in the nearby township of Kayamandi.

Credit for Semester Study Abroad

For High Point University to recognize the credits you complete abroad, you must earn a grade equivalent to a C in the U.S. HPU will not accept credit for courses with grades of C– or below. Grades for all courses earned abroad are recorded on the foreign transcript. Credits are received by HPU as transfer credits, which means the credit is received but the grade is not. What will I experience at Stellenbosch?

Many trips are included with your program fee such as:

  • Garden Route Tour (6 days) - Every semester the AIFS Resident Director organizes a trip to the famous Garden Route during the mid-semester break. The route takes its name from the lush and ecologically diverse vegetation and abundant lagoons and lakes to be found along the spectacularly scenic coastline which stretches from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape. There is much to experience on the Garden Route, including kayaking with seals and dolphins, visiting Cango Caves or an ostrich farm. Visit the Kleinplasie Open Air Museum for an insight into the lifestyle of an early Cape farming family, the limestone canverns at the Cango Caves and Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of South Africa. Morning visits to the crocodile and cheetah farm and to one of the many ostrich farms in the area are included. Board the old steam train, the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, at Wilderness station for a scenic 2-hour ride through the lake districts of Wilderness and Sedgefield to Knysna. Enjoy a cruise across the Knysna Lagoon to the Featherbed Nature Reserve and a guided trailer ride to the top of the reserve, which reveals marvelous views of the area. Join the guide for a walk back or jump on the trailer for a slow drive back to the lagoon. Stop at the Knysna Elephant Park to see, feed and touch these amazing animals. The next stop is Monkey Land to meet the different species of monkeys and apes living in the reserve.
  • Vineyard tour and wine tasting
  • Visit to Parliament in Cape Town
  • Trips to Robben Island, Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope
  • Weekend hiking
  • Social get-togethers at a local pub
  • Rugby
  • Beach days
  • Picnics
  • Music Concerts

Many students are attracted to South Africa because of the close interaction they can have with the country’s wildlife. Besides visiting the “Big Six” (lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, rhino and whale), students will have the opportunity to see 17 species of monkeys in their 12-hectare, free-range environment in the forest on the other side of Plettenberg Bay. They are not in cages (one or two might even come and sit on your shoulder).
