Housing

Live on campus in the University’s new International Student Residence. This residence is specially designed for study abroad students. Facilities are of a high standard with single and double occupancy rooms with shared bathrooms. All rooms are air conditioned, and the residence also provides a dining room, computer room, T.V. room and laundry facilities.

Meals

All meals are provided in the residence cafeteria, which provides good quality Indian and Western food.

Cost Breakdown for Fall 2013 & Spring 2014

Application Fee: $500.00

The application fee is non-refundable. Due at time of application.

Program Fee: $20,800

The program fee is payable to High Point University and includes tuition, fees, housing, and meals. Participants are billed at the HPU All-Inclusive Fee rate of $20,800.

IMPORTANT: High Point University affiliates with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) to provide this educational program to HPU students. Students looking for information online may find discrepancies in program fees between what HPU charges and what AIFS charges. Due to the terms agreed upon in our affiliation agreement, HPU students cannot apply directly to AIFS for this program, nor can they opt to pay program fees directly to AIFS.

Departure: As December 26th finally came around, I packed up my suitcase and boarded the plane for my Indian adventure. I spent the next four and a half months exploring the rich and beautifully diverse Indian culture and society. I decided India was the best destination for me because I am a religion major who loves learning about different religions – India is one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world, predominated by Hinduism with other religious traditions such as Islam and Sikhism also intertwined in the culture.

Hyderabad, India: After a week of travel in the northern part of the country, my study abroad group and I made our way down to Hyderabad, in the south-central region of the subcontinent. The city embodies the diversity of India with its small towns and villages, the old city of Islam and the many beautiful historic mosques and forts, all contrasted with the industrialized, Westernized portions of the city. With many street bazars, markets, and shopping malls, as well as forts, mosques and temples, Hyderabad is a magnificent city to live in. Students can call a taxi, or for a more thrilling and inexpensive exploration through the city, students can wave down a rickshaw or squeeze onto the bus to see all that Hyderabad has to offer.

University of Hyderabad: UoH is one of India’s leading central universities, meaning that there are students from all over India, and primarily is made up of graduate students. Don’t worry if you don’t speak one of the many languages of India – all students and professors at UoH are required to speak English in the classroom. The education system is much different than I expected. Students take four courses each semester that are lecture based and last roughly two hours. There are three internals (tests or projects) for each class, but students only have to complete two out of the three, and one final at the end of the semester. The atmosphere of the university campus is lively with students regularly gathering for sports, singing and dancing, or just hanging out at Peacock Lake or under the big tree in the middle of campus. You are bound to see at least one student protest during your semester at UoH as students stand up for their rights and the rights of minority groups.

Accommodations: Tagore International Hostel is located on south campus and houses all the international students. The hostel is a hall-style dorm with shared bathrooms at each end of the hall. There is a common room, a TV room, two decks where you can do your daily yoga or sit and chat with friends, and a computer room, though all dorm rooms have internet connection. Mr. Das, the hostel director, is very friendly and a good man to go to for advice on good restaurants throughout the city or the best travel options throughout the country. All meals are provided by the hostel and served by a kitchen staff that is sure to brighten your day.

Travel: Travel throughout India is incredibly inexpensive. I didn’t expect to travel frequently, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see the country for such low prices. Plane travel is an option, but if you want a truly Indian experience, book a bus or train ticket and experience the way most Indians travel through the country. Stay on a tea plantation and pick your own tea in the lovely mountains of Darjeeling or stay in a beach hut in Kerala. If you’re feeling really brave,go to Varanasi where people pack the streets and the narrow alley-ways that weave throughout the holy city. For the adventurous soul, India is the destination for you.

Cultural Experience: There is a Hindu temple at the top of a gorgeous mountain city where thousands of Hindus wait in line daily to shave their heads as both a devotion to God and a relinquishment of their pride. I took a 12 and a half hours bus ride with my roommate to visit an Indian friend’s family and they took us to Tirumala, the mountain city. I was so moved by the bald men and women who filled the streets that I decided to shave my head. Unfortunately, I decided this after I had already gotten back to Hyderabad and was never able to go back to Tirumala to shave my head at the temple. Instead, a friend at the hostel became a barber for the afternoon and shaved my head as well as two other friends’ heads. Doing that was an incredibly liberating experience and represented my own journey toward self-acceptance and was a statement of my defiance of beauty and gender norms with which I do not agree.

I was able to grown significantly through my study abroad experience and I hope your experience provides growth and enrichment for you as well.
