Housing

At the University of Salzburg, students live in a university residence hall or in a home stay with a local family.

Residence Hall

Each residence has double rooms with a private bathroom, a direct phone line for incoming calls and a shared kitchen. Students who wish to bring their own computers may connect to the Internet from their room for a small fee.

Austrian Homestay

Many students consider the homestay experience the most rewarding part of their time abroad. It is the best way to learn German, get involved in the culture and integrate into the local community. Typically, you will have a double room, sharing with another AIFS student in an apartment or house located outside the city center. In many homes, students have the use of only the bedroom, bathroom and limited use of the kitchen.

Meals

Meals are not provided through the University of Salzburg; however, students will receive an allowance towards the purchase of breakfast and lunch or dinner from Monday through Friday. For lunch, students tend to gather at one of the University restaurants or nearby cafés. Please note: this is a subsidy and will not cover the cost of meals in expensive restaurants.

Cost Breakdown for Fall 2013 & Spring 2014

Application Fee: $500.00

The application fee is non-refundable. Due at time of application.

Program Fee: $19,393.75

The program fee is payable to High Point University and includes tuition, fees, housing, and some meals. Participants are billed at the HPU All-Inclusive Fee rate of $20,800 with a less of $1,406.25 for meals not included.

IMPORTANT: High Point University affiliates with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) to provide this educational program to HPU students. Students looking for information online may find discrepancies in program fees between what HPU charges and what AIFS charges. Due to the terms agreed upon in our affiliation agreement, HPU students cannot apply directly to AIFS for this program, nor can they opt to pay program fees directly to AIFS.

When I first came to High Point University, I knew I wanted to study abroad. In fact, I had been planning to study in Salzburg because I fell in love with the city when I first visited with my family in the 8^th grade. In addition, I had studied German for six years throughout middle and high school. So, to say I was excited about going to Austria was an understatement; I was about to embark on the journey of a lifetime.

Salzburg, Austria: Salzburg is a beautiful city filled with rich history and picturesque scenery. At the heart of Salzburg is the historic Altstadt, a UNESCO world heritage site. Take a stroll down its quaint alleys and cobblestone paths, and experience for yourself the same streets Mozart once travelled over 250 years ago. Salzburg is a small, but lively city. It has a unique character and charm, easily making it one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe.

University of Salzburg: In Salzburg, the city is your campus. The University has buildings sprawled out across the entire city. While many of your classes will be held in the Unipark, others will be held all over. In between class you can experience the traditional Austrian “Kaffeecultur” by grabbing a cup of coffee, and enjoying a delicious pastry at one of the many cafés in the city. My classes were primarily taught in English, however I did take one that was taught solely in German. Do not worry if you cannot speak German, you will be put in an intensive language course and be speaking it in no time.

Accommodations: In the AIFS program, you have one of two options. You can either opt for a homestay with a local Austrian family, or you can live in dorm style housing. I lived in Haus Humboldt, a dorm primarily filled with international students. AIFS tries to spread their students out in different dorms around the city to provide you with the most authentic experience possible. You probably won’t be living with all Americans. The thing I loved the most about my dorm was the fantastic kitchen. Every floor in the building has a kitchen with stoves, ovens, and two long tables. The kitchen was the liveliest place in the dorm, and is where I went to meet and interact with other students from all over the world.

Travel: Austria is centrally located in the heart of the European Alps. By far, the most efficient way to travel around Austria is by train. From Salzburg, everything is easily reachable. You have easy access to the mountains and lakes, as well as other European cities such as Vienna, Budapest, Munich, and Prague. If you plan on doing a lot of traveling throughout Austria, it would be helpful to purchase a Vorteilskarte at the local train station. This discount card is available to anyone less than 26 years of age and provides you with rates that are up to 50% off.

Cultural Experience: Throughout my time in Salzburg, I volunteered on a weekly basis at a local Austrian Kindergarten. This experience proved to be invaluable for me. It not only assimilated me completely into the local culture, but also provided me with an opportunity to experience first hand the everyday life of Austrian school children. There was no English spoken, so I had to rely on my German language skills. I had to quickly learn to thrive in an environment vastly different from what I was accustomed to. Overall, it was a wonderful experience that I would not trade for anything else.

Advice for Future Students: Although I strongly encourage you to study in Salzburg, studying abroad in general is a great experience. It allows you to broaden your horizons and learn to see the world in innovative and exciting ways. Try new things, be open-minded, and if study abroad changes your life, let it.
