First Year Navigator Program

What is a First Year Navigator?

First Year Navigators engage with incoming students to build a greater sense of belonging to High Point University and the support network at the University.

What is the purpose of a First Year Navigator?

Below are some of the responsibilities of First Year Navigators:

  • Serve as a source of information for first-year students during Orientation Weekends and Open House events.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Student Success Team and first-year students.
  • Provide support to assigned first-year students that correspond to the respective School/academic area of study.
  • Coordinate student participation to events hosted by the Office of Student Success and High Point University.
  • Instruct first-year students on how to navigate various academic systems (Blackboard, Starfish, Student Planning, My Stuff, etc.) and to develop their self-sufficiency in utilizing these tools.

Responsibilities of the First Year Navigators

  • Commit to working at least one Orientation Weekend (required), and one Open House event (required).
  • Support Student Success Coaches at the following university events:
    • Orientation Weekends
      • Send pre-approved email template to 25-30 incoming first year students as provided by the Captain for the designated School/area of study.
      • Meet and greet assigned students at Orientation events.
      • Other duties as needed.
    • Open Houses
      • Speak with prospective students and parents.
      • Assist in distributing marketing material.
      • Represent designated major and/or Office of Student Success at the majors/engagement fair.
    • Attend School/department sponsored “Faculty Meet & Greet” event in the first month of the fall semester.
    • Promote all Student Success programming events and participate, if available.
    • Assist Student Success Coaches with the following:
      • Help students navigate Starfish and Blackboard within the first three weeks of classes by holding weekly office hours (one hour per week).
      • During the month of November, Navigators will hold weekly office hours (one hour per week) to assist students with navigating the Student Planning registration system.
      • Coordinating a community service project for the MLK Day of Service.
