Tips To Ensure A Successful Freshman Enrollment Process

01.28.2013

As a father of three I know all to well the mixture of emotions that high school seniors and parents are currently experiencing. Whether it’s the first child you’re sending to college or the fifth, the enrollment process can at times be overwhelming. There is no roadmap or instructions on how to conquer the transition from high school senior to college freshman, but below I have complied my own “Tips To Ensure A Successful Freshman Enrollment Process.”

1. Encourage your student to Join the Official High Point University Class of 2017 Facebook Group

The Official High Point University Class of 2017 is exclusively for admitted students and it’s a great way for your son or daughter to meet their future classmates, make new friends, stay up to date on the next steps in the enrollment process, and maybe even find their future roommate. If your student is not a member of the group, I highly encourage them to join today.  http://www.facebook.com/groups/HPU2017/

And while your student is connecting with their future classmates, you can connect with both current and prospective HPU parents on the Official High Point University Parents Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/HPUParents

2. Sign up for an Early Registration event

Early Registration gives your student the opportunity to get a jump-start on their academic career by registering for classes prior to the start of the 2013-2014 academic year. During Early Registration your student will meet with their academic advisor, select and register for classes, have their HPU ID made, meet hundreds of future classmates and much more.

The event gives you and your family the opportunity to meet other members of the Class of 2017 along with their families, visit freshman residence halls, engage in HPU student-led activities, and attend and participate in open-discussion forums with current students and administrators on various topics including the freshman transition process.

Over 90% of our incoming freshmen will attend an Early Registration event. So if you haven’t signed up yet, I strongly encourage you to do so today. Registration for Early Registration is available online through your student’s MyStuff account only. Early Registration is exclusively for members of the Class of 2017 who have paid their enrollment deposit.

3. Complete the Housing Selection Process

Last week we mailed our 2013 Student Life Housing brochure. The brochure explains in detail our state-of-the-art freshman housing options and gives step-by-step instructions on how to access and complete the housing survey.

Priority on housing selection is given based on the following criteria

A) Application Plan – Early Decision students receive top priority followed by Early Decision II, Early Action, then Regular Decision.

B) Enrollment Deposit- Within each Application Plan priority is given based on the date we receive your Enrollment Deposit

Only those students who have submitted their Enrollment Deposit will have access to the Housing Selection Process.

4. Maximize your Financial Aid & Scholarship Opportunities

Being a parent of three, I know how important of an investment college is. Being proactive is the best way to ensure that you are maximizing the financial aid and scholarship opportunities available to your family.

A) If you are applying for Financial Aid, I encourage you to submit the FAFSA and the CSS Profile as soon as possible. The earlier you submit these, the sooner the Office of Financial Planning will be able to compile your Financial Aid Award Packet.

B) If your student has been extended a scholarship offer from High Point University it is important that they accept the offer by the date indicated on the scholarship letter. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact your student’s Admissions Counselor.

5. Never hesitate to call us!

Most importantly, never hesitate to call us. We are here to ensure that your student’s transition to college goes smoothly – please let us know how we can be of service to you and your family.
