Dr. Julie B. Wiest will speak about the relationship between gender and crime, with a focus on cultural and social influences. Following a brief overview of gendered patterns in offending, Wiest will draw on her own research on serial murder and filicide to offer examples of gendered patterns in the commission of violent crime, gendered representations of offenders, and gendered treatment of offenders within the criminal justice system.

Julie B. Wiest is an assistant professor of communication at High Point University. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology and, in addition to communication courses, has taught courses in deviance and crime, gender, and social psychology. Much of her research focuses on violent behavior and the intersections of gender, race, class, and crime. Her recent publications include a book, “Creating Cultural Monsters: Serial Murder in America,” that explores the sociocultural context of serial murder, and an article in the journal “Criminal Justice Studies” that examines gendered treatment in the criminal justice system in cases of filicide.
