“Images, Identity, and Community”

Safeya Sayed Shedeed, the mother of a protester who died after being shot by police officers on January 28, 2011 (a day locals dubbed the "Friday of Rage"), cries as she waits to hear the result of a sentencing trial for former president Hosni Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly who are being tried on charges of corruption and giving orders to kill protesters. ÒI want to avenge my son,Ó she said. ÒWho will get my sonÕs rights back?Ó

As part of High Point University’s Common Experience theme “Just Communities” Laura El-Tantawy will speak about her experiences as a female photographer and address the role of photographic images as a tool to explore identity and community, with an emphasis on Indian farmers and the Arab Spring.

Film Screening: “The Hunting Ground”

From the makers of “The Invisible War” comes a startling exposé of rape crimes on U.S. campuses, their institutional cover-ups and the devastating toll they take on students and their families. The film follows the lives of several undergraduate assault survivors as they attempt to pursue – despite incredible opposition, harassment, and traumatic aftermath – their education and justice. A discussion will follow the film focused on the film’s impact.

“The Other Side of My Heart” is a Tango concert performed by the Lorena Guillen Tango Ensemble. The first half is based on the real stories of a group of Latino women that immigrated to North Carolina. In this musical piece their stories become a cycle of five songs interlaced by these Latino women’s stories in which they reflect about their trajectory from their home countries to their new place in United States. Deborah Miranda – “Bad Indians” Lecture

Poet Deborah Miranda will read from her mixed-genre collection, Bad Indians: A Tribal Memoir (2013), winner of a Gold Medal from the Independent Publishers Association, winner of the PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles Literary Award, and shortlisted for the William Saroyan Award. Dr. Miranda is an enrolled member of the Ohlone-Costanoan Esselin Nation of California and is the John Lucien Smith Term Professor of English at Washington and Lee University.
