Women’s and Gender Studies

Check out our new Fall 2014 Courses!

Since the 1970s, Women’s Studies has been an interdisciplinary academic field comprised of scholars, students, and activists working to identify, analyze, and challenge interlocking systems of privilege and oppression that shape the material realities of women’s lives. Growing from this discipline has been the emergence of Gender Studies, which seeks to move away from essentialist notions of “man” and “woman” in an exploration of how the social relations of women and men structure politics, culture, and the ways in which individuals experience the lived environment.

The Women’s and Gender Studies Program at High Point University pays respect to the history of Women’s Studies, while acknowledging the growth of the discipline in response to the myriad of experiences of women and men globally, and the inclusion of diversity across the gender and transgender spectrum. Students taking courses in Women’s and Gender Studies are exposed to a wide variety of theories, methodologies, and perspectives, from fields of study such as Communication, English, History, Modern Foreign Languages, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, and Sociology. Students are trained to think critically and synthesize information from a variety of sources in the production of new knowledge and information systems. This prepares students to be global citizens who go on to have successful careers in areas such as law, criminal justice, health care and medicine, public policy, education, journalism, and counseling.
