Directed Study<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. A student interested in a Directed Study should initially consult with his\/her academic advisor.<\/li>\n
  2. Normally, Directed Study is an option only available\u00a0to students who are within one or two semesters of\u00a0graduation and who have no alternative means of satisfying\u00a0department or university graduation requirements except\u00a0by enrolling for an additional semester(s).<\/li>\n
  3. Directed Study may not be used to repeat a course.<\/li>\n
  4. Students must have a minimum of a 2.0 grade point\u00a0average to enroll in a Directed Study.<\/li>\n
  5. Introductory courses and courses offered every semester\u00a0are not available as a Directed Study except by special\u00a0permission of the appropriate College\/School Dean and the\u00a0Provost.<\/li>\n
  6. Students may register for Directed Study (limited by the\u00a0availability and willingness of the faculty to supervise\u00a0such study) during any regular registration period in the\u00a0academic calendar (a regular semester or summer terms).<\/li>\n
  7. Students may register for a maximum of four (4) courses\u00a0by Directed Study, with only one (1) Directed Study being\u00a0undertaken in any registration period. Any exceptions will\u00a0be made only by special permission of the Provost.<\/li>\n
  8. A Directed Study must be taught by a full-time faculty\u00a0member. The original syllabus of the course will be\u00a0followed.<\/li>\n
  9. The minimum student contact with the instructor will be\u00a0five (5) hours per semester credit. A proposed schedule\u00a0of meetings between student and instructor should be\u00a0attached to the application.<\/li>\n
  10. Directed Study applications must be approved by the\u00a0academic advisor, supervising instructor, chair of the\u00a0department of the independent study course, the chair\u00a0of the student\u2019s major department, and the Dean of the\u00a0college or school of the student\u2019s major.<\/li>\n
  11. The course will not be entered on the student\u2019s record\u00a0until the Office of Student Accounts has received tuition\u00a0payment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Independent Study<\/h3>\n

    In Independent Study the student must delineate the topic, the\u00a0direction(s), the depth to be explored, the various ramifications\u00a0and limits, and the method and amount of reporting. These\u00a0factors must be agreed upon by the student, the supervising\u00a0faculty member, the chair of the department granting credit,\u00a0the chair of the major department, and the dean(s) of the\u00a0college or school, prior to study approval. Planned studies\u00a0also must be approved by the appropriate institutional review\u00a0board. Enrollment in Independent Study shall last for only one\u00a0semester, and any extension of time may be granted upon the\u00a0consensus of the supervising faculty member, the two chairs,\u00a0and the dean(s). The grade (Pass\/Fail or letter grade) to be\u00a0received for an Independent Study shall be decided prior to\u00a0the formal beginning of the work. The grade is awarded by the\u00a0supervising faculty member.<\/p>\n

    Guidelines<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Normally, this program is recommended for senior level\u00a0students. First-term freshmen may not enroll in an\u00a0Independent Study.<\/li>\n
    2. Students must have a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average\u00a0to enroll in an Independent Study.<\/li>\n
    3. Students may register for a maximum of four (4)\u00a0Independent Studies with only one (1) Independent Study\u00a0being undertaken in any registration period.<\/li>\n
    4. An Independent Study must be taught by a full-time\u00a0faculty member.<\/li>\n
    5. The following information should be attached to the\u00a0application form: an abstract of the topic, including the\u00a0direction(s) of the research, the depth to be explored, the\u00a0various ramifications and limits of the project, and the\u00a0method and amount of reporting, including a proposed\u00a0schedule of meetings between the student and the\u00a0supervising instructor.<\/li>\n
    6.
