Greetings future HPU students! My name is Hope Blaylock and I welcome you to my blog—Save Room for Hope (clever, I know)! I am fortunate to be an Admissions Counselor here at High Point University, in the gorgeous Southern oasis that is North Carolina. I travel throughout the country to find YOU—the multi-talented, motivated, intelligent, fabulous future students of High Point University. When I’m not visiting your high schools or meeting you at college fairs, I’m doing everything I can to answer your questions about HPU and to help make your transition to college life as fun and exciting as possible! I do all sorts of things: from meeting with you and your family when you come to tour our incredible campus, to answering questions on Facebook, to writing this blog. I recently created a contest for students who have been admitted for fall 2009 to win tickets to see Gavin DeGraw on HPU’s campus on April 30th! When I introduced that contest, I got to make this silly video. I also spend a good bit of time creating fun design ideas for all the extraordinary information we send you. No two days are the same and my job is an absolute blast!
So who is this Hope girl and what does she know about High Point anyway?
It’s true, I didn’t graduate from HPU. But, in 2007 I did earn a B.A. in Communication & Rhetoric from UNC-Chapel Hill, the home of, ahem, the 2009 National CHAMPS! Upon graduation I took a gap year of sorts and worked in a bakery/café in southern Colorado and loved every moment of it! While visiting North Carolina for my brother’s high school graduation, my mom insisted that I come with her to see High Point’s campus, where my brother would be attending (he is currently a very happy HPU freshman). On vacation with little else to do, I agreed. When you see our campus for yourself, you’ll understand why two weeks later, I packed my bags and moved back east to begin my new job at High Point University. I’ve been here since July 2008 and each day I love my job even more!
I hope you’ll find my blog helpful as you navigate the end of high school and transition into college. It can be an overwhelming time, but with a little help along the way, you’ll find that it’s really fun too! It wasn’t long ago that I was in your shoes and I’m watching my 17 year old brother go through the same process right now. I want your college search experience to be exciting and enjoyable and filled with hope for your bright future! So in the midst of all your hard work, activities and application essays, don’t forget to save room for hope!
