HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 24, 2011 – High Point University will present the 6th Annual Gunther E. Rothenberg Seminar in Military History on Nov. 5. The event will be held in the Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce Ballroom, and is open to the public.
The seminar, named for Gunther E. Rothenberg – a world-renowned military historian who authored scores of books and articles on a wide-range of military history, is a tribute to Rothenberg’s scholarship and dedication to the field of military history. The HPU Department of History sponsors the annual seminar, which offers a different theme each year and features a host of leading scholars who present their most recent research and latest interpretations.
The theme for this year’s daylong event is “War in the Mediterranean World, 1450-1950,” and will feature presentations from Dr. Jeremy Black, professor of history at the University of Exeter; Dr. Virginia Aksan, professor of history at McMaster University; Dr. Kelly DeVries, Mark Clark chair of military history at The Citadel; Dr. Niccolo Capponi, Capponi Archive, Florence, Italy.
Topics that will be discussed during the seminar include: “The British Navy in the Mediterranean, 1650-1950”; “Whatever Happened to the Janissaries? Revisiting the Decline of the Corps 1650-1800”; “Why Tunisia Mattered? Ottoman Expansion in the Mediterranean in the Early 16th Century”; and “The Enemy Coast: The Border. Anti-Corsair Operations post-Lepanto.”
“Hundreds of HPU students, along with faculty and guests from other universities and the local community have attended the seminar,” says Dr. Frederick Schneid, chair of the Department of History at HPU. “Each presentation is followed by lively interaction between the audience and the speaker. The seminar serves as a platform to advance and encourage the study of military history.”
