HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 12, 2011 – Dr. Heather Ahn-Redding, assistant professor of criminal justice at High Point University, recently presented a scholarly paper at the Southern Criminal Justice Association conference in Nashville, Tenn.
The paper, titled “Regional Differences in Sentencing Practices,” explores various sentencing practices across the United States to determine whether regional differences exist. The paper was recently accepted for publication by the “International Journal of Punishment and Sentencing,” a peer-reviewed Australian law journal.
The paper was a collaborative work by Dr. Ahn-Redding, Ron Lamb, associate professor of mathematics at HPU, Bonnie Caster, a recent HPU graduate, and Colleen Ehatt, a senior psychology and criminal justice major at HPU.
“I enjoyed participating in the conference and being able to co-present with a student,” says Ahn-Redding. “We enjoyed hearing the other presentations in our panel and learning about other current criminal justice related topics.”
Ehatt says the collaboration was a great experience. “I really liked the feedback from presentation viewers and found the other presentations to be very interesting; the whole experience of traveling and attending such a conference was great, and I am so glad to have been given the opportunity,” she says.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with students, as they both had excellent ideas and made many substantial contributions to the article itself. I hope to work with more students on future projects,” Ahn-Redding says. “I also appreciate Dr. Lamb’s contributions, as he provided the statistical expertise that enabled us to analyze our data.”
Ahn-Redding also attended the SCJA conference last year in Clearwater Beach, Fla., where she presented a poster.
The SCJA Conference aims to present the most current research findings in criminal justice. Members participate in paper presentations, panels, and discussions.
