HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 17, 2011 – During these economically challenging times, many people are forced to go without the most basic needs, including food. High Point University has developed a new ongoing program designed to make a difference by partnering with Food Donation Connection and Open Door Ministries to donate surplus food from the university.
Surplus food from HPU’s 12 dining locations on campus will be collected and stored instead of tossed aside, then picked up by the food bank. From there, it will be distributed to feed the hungry in the community.
The total pounds of food donated will be tracked through an online system. So far, the university has contributed more than 300 pounds of food in three weeks to local food banks.
“There are always people who need help in our community,” says Don Scarborough, vice president for community relations. “Being able to lift spirits, especially now in the season of Thanksgiving, by doing something as simple as extending our hands and feeding the hungry is truly an amazing feeling. We, at High Point University, are so fortunate to be able to lend a hand to our community where it’s needed most during this season.”
