HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 9, 2011 – Children from Montlieu Academy of Technology had the chance to take a break from class and enjoy an afternoon of fun at the High Point University Fall Festival, all while learning how to use technology in new ways.
The festival, organized and led by nearly 50 student-volunteers from the Volunteer Center at HPU, invited 150 children from the school for an afternoon of activities that included games, inflatables, face painting, cotton candy and lunch. The festival also included a station to write letters to the troops, and a QR Code Treasure Hunt. The elementary students brought their iPads from school to the event, which they used to scan QR codes and navigate the treasure hunt around the Slane Student Center.
The children had previously been trained to use the iPads, thanks to a partnership between HPU and Montlieu Elementary. The iPads, which were funded by four partners – HPU, Businesses for Excellence in Education, the William B. Millis Fund of the High Point Community Foundation and the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation – were revealed to students on the first day of school this year. Following the presentation of the iPads, the HPU IT staff, as well as faculty from the School of Education, has been assisting the children on using the technology in the classrooms, making the treasure hunt not only an exciting activity, but a learning experience as well.

“Today was a huge success,” says Maggie Sturdevant, student director of the Volunteer Center at HPU. “The elementary school students had a wonderful time, and it was great seeing their smiling faces on our campus. They were able to utilize their iPads during their time here as well, and they spent a lot of time taking pictures and videotaping the HPU Toccatatones, who came to perform for the children. … The day truly couldn’t have been more successful, and we are so thankful to have such wonderful volunteers here at HPU.”
