HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 24, 2012 – Ross Roberts, assistant professor of accounting in the Phillips School of Business at High Point University, recently attended the American Accounting Association annual meeting in Denver.
At the conference, which focused on effective teaching methods in accounting, Roberts presented a paper co-written by fellow assistant accounting professor at HPU, Dr. Premalata Sundaram. The article, titled “Check My Work! Instantaneous Feedback Targeted E-Book Reading and Student Performance in Introductory Accounting,” examines the benefits of online homework along with other online tools in accounting courses.
In order to research the topic, Roberts introduced some new technology into his classes at HPU that allowed students to complete accounting exercises using their own computers. His study found that students using online technology in class spent more time outside of class studying and working on exercises than students who did not. These students also found time spent working outside of class more important when they had access to online tools.
“Since professors are constantly trying to get students to understand the importance of their study time outside the classroom, it seems using the implementation of the online tools will help us accomplish that goal,” says Roberts.
Roberts also participated in a poster session, creating a finalist entry, titled “Effective Learning Strategies,” which supported the results from his paper.
