HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 1, 2012 – It may be wintertime, but High Point University is buzzing with life and activity thanks to more than 6,000 guests who will visit campus during the month of February. Prospective students and families, as well as family members of current students – many of them from out of state – will provide an economic boost to the local economy, as they’ll eat in local restaurants, shop in local retail stores, stay in local hotels, rent automobiles and utilize the Piedmont Triad International Airport.
Activities during the month of February include the annual Family Weekend, which invites students and their families to take part in many fun and entertaining activities, to be held Feb. 3-5. Activities include a lecture series, Choral Concert performances, comedy performances by Sean Emery, performance by the North Carolina Dance Theatre, as well as Men’s and Women’s basketball games, Family Bingo and an art exhibit featuring Char Norman.
Also scheduled are two Presidential Scholar weekends on Feb. 10-11 and Feb. 24-25. During these two weekends, top academic students from all over the country who have been admitted to HPU visit the university by invitation to interview for top academic scholarships.
The month will also be filled with sporting events on campus, including basketball, lacrosse and baseball – bringing many more visitors to town.
“Thanks to HPU, we have three sold-out weekends in February,” says Nancy Auman, general manager of the Courtyard by Marriott. “The excitement of the potential students and families is contagious and our team is so fortunate to be a small part of the great things going on at the university.”
The HPU campus is full of activities all year long, and Dr. Don Scarborough, vice president for Community Relations of HPU, says these types of events – which bring guests from out of town – provide a remarkable boost to the local economy.
The university’s annual impact on the state is more than $418 million.
Last year, HPU hosted more than 77,000 visitors throughout the year; numbers continue to increase year-after-year.
