HIGH POINT, N.C., March 5, 2012 – High Point University will host Dr. Stanley Hauerwas, the Gilbert T. Rowe professor of theological ethics at Duke Divinity School, for the annual Finch Lecture. The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. on March 19 in the Francis Auditorium in Phillips Hall; the event is open to the public.
Hauerwas, who will lecture on the topic, “Doing Nothing Gallantly: How Christians Should Be Ill,” has sought to recover the significance of the virtues for understanding the nature of the Christian life. This search has led him to emphasize the importance of the church, as well as narrative for understanding Christian existence. His work crosses disciplinary lines, and covers systematic theology, philosophical theology and ethics, political theory, as well as philosophy of social science and medical ethics.
Hauerwas was named “America’s Best Theologian” by Time Magazine in 2001, and has authored many books, essays and more. His book, “A Community of Character: Toward a Constructive Christian Social Ethic,” was selected as one of the 100 most important books on religion of the 20th century. Hauerwas’ more recent books include: “Matthew: Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible,” and “The State of the University: Academic Knowledges and the Knowledge of God.”

The Finch Lectures at HPU began in 1960, with Dean Liston Pope of Yale Divinity School as lecturer, in an effort to foster dialogue and to deepen understanding regarding issues of importance to communities of faith. Since the inaugural event, a distinguished line of clergy, humanitarians and scholars has visited the HPU campus each year.
