HIGH POINT, N.C., April 10, 2012 – The High Point University Department of History is launching a new venture called American Discoveries that brings leading scholars in the field of American history to campus to present groundbreaking research and research methods to students and the local community.
The first American Discoveries event will be held at 5:30 p.m. on April 12 in the Phillips School of Business and will feature a presentation from Dr. Michael Willrich, professor of history at Brandeis University. The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required, and parking is reserved for guests behind the Wilson School of Commerce.
Willrich is a premiere historian of the American legal system. His books have been acclaimed widely within the academic community as well as in the New York Times and on National Public Radio. At the event, he will be speaking on his most recent book, “Pox: An American History,” which addresses the nation’s fight against a smallpox epidemic in the early 20th century and the battle for civil liberties that emerged out of this tragedy.
“The American Discoveries series is not only meant to bring major scholars to campus, but to give students the opportunity to work with these scholars in small groups as well as engage the local community,” says Dr. Paul Ringel, assistant professor of history at HPU.
