HIGH POINT, N.C., April 26, 2012 – The freshman class at High Point University knows it’s important to give back to the local community. This semester, they sold Class of 2015 T-shirts as a way to raise funds for Triad Ladder of Hope, a nonprofit organization in High Point dedicated to the eradication of the exploitation, sale and enslavement of men, women and children.
The freshman class presented a check for $1,500 to a representative from the organization at a recent Student Government Association meeting.
“There are not enough words to say thank you to the High Point University freshman class,” said Sandra Johnson, president and founder of the nonprofit organization, about the students’ efforts. “They have blessed our organization so much with this gift to help us continue our fight against slavery in our communities. We thank them for being a blessing to our staff, board members and clients as the gift will help us continue the work God has given us to do.”
At HPU’s annual Honors Day ceremony, the fundraiser was named Event of the Year for the 2011-2012 academic year.
According to Triad Ladder of Hope, human trafficking is modern day slavery and is the fastest-growing crime in the world and the second fastest growing crime in the United States.
“We thoughtfully chose Triad Ladder of Hope because we wanted to support a local charity that is doing work right here in our own community,” said freshman class president Alex Nelson. “We also wanted to raise awareness that human trafficking is indeed a problem in the world.”
