Professor Publishes Tourism Research in Academy of Marketing Studies Journal

HIGH POINT, N.C., May 24, 2012 – Dr. Richard Parker, chair of Marketing and Sport Management in the Phillips School of Business, recently had an article published in the “Academy of Marketing Studies Journal,” titled “International Design Concepts in Internet Tourism Marketing: Comparing Web-Design.” Parker co-authored the article with Dr. Donna Sears of Acadia University and Dr. Rachel K. Smith of the University of Memphis.

Tourism marketing is Parker’s primary area of research. The article reviewed and compared the Web design practices of tourism authorities in Atlantic Canada and New England, noting the differences in emphasis between these two regions.

“This most recent publication was a follow-up to an initial presentation on this same topic at the Society for Marketing Advances Conference in 2007,” said Parker. “Dr. Stephanie Crofton (associate dean of the Phillips School of Business) and I have had two presentations since November on how social media content in websites has impacted Atlantic Canada tourism, and last month I gave a presentation in Atlanta on a new study I’m conducting on websites promoting tourism in the province of Alberta.”

Parker hopes to use his research in the HPU classrooms in the near future as well. Parker already offers classes in international marketing and plans to offer a new course on tourism marketing in the future.

“The research has a direct impact in that I am able to share the findings with my students,” said Parker. “This article and others will be included in the readings for the students so they have a better understanding of the relationship between marketing and tourism.”
